This volume, consisting of 19 articles from "Readings in Linguistics I" and 20 articles from "Readings in Linguistics II", constitutes a collection of papers in English, German and French on subjects of continuing interest to linguists of all schools. Complete with a new preface explaining the editors' principles of selection and bibliographical citations, "Readings in Linguistics I & II" includes the work of Bloomfield, Trubetzkoy, Firth, Harris and Kurylowicz, as well as articles by Vachek, Bazell, Chao, Fischer-Jorgensen and Tesniere.

This 1974 book is a personal survey by an eminent linguist of most branches of linguistics, setting out its position, questioning some underlying assumptions, and in general testing the adequacy of descriptive theories. Though the underlying theory is basically that of transformational-generative linguistics, there are many queries and disagreements, some of which might be called structuralist in a broad sense, or even taxonomic. The particular problems chosen are those which have forced themselves on Professor Householder during a lifetime of reading, teaching and writing about linguistics, including the justification of linguistic research itself.

First published in 1997. This is Volume I in the Uralic and Altaic Series. Up until the 1950s, Uralic and Altaic studies were virtually unknown in American academic circles. The somewhat arcane name of "Uralic and Altaic" conceals a field of study which, particularly in recent years, since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, is receiving considerable, well- Series Introduction xi deserved and overdue attention. Expressed in contemporary, political terms they focus on the following, today independent, states: Finland, Estonia, Hungary, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan, and Mongolia. To these should be added some republics that are within the Russian Federation such as those of the Bashkir, Tatars, and Chuvash in Europe and of the Yakuts in the northeast of Siberia.
