Adaptive filtering is a branch of digital signal processing which enables the selective enhancement of desired elements of a signal and the reduction of undesired elements. This book is written for students at bachelor and master programs and has four different purposes, which split the book into four parts: 1. To teach first or early year undergraduate engineering students basic knowledge in technical computations and programming using MATLAB. The first part starts from first principles and is therefore well suited both for readers with prior exposure to MATLAB but lacking a solid foundational knowledge of the capabilities of the system and readers not having any previous experience with MATLAB. The foundational knowledge gained from these interactive guided tours of the system will hopefully be sufficient for an effective utilization of MATLAB in the engineering profession, in education and in research. 2. To explain the foundations of more advanced use of MATLAB using the facilities added the last couple of years, such as extended data structures, object orientation and advanced graphics. 3. To give an introduction to the use of MATLAB in typical undergraduate courses in electrical engineering and mathematics, such as calculus, algebra, numerical analysis and statistics. This part also contains introductions and mini-manuals to the most used MATLAB toolboxes. Thus, some chapters require additional MATLAB toolboxes. The idea is to give a brief tutorial on each subject and show the possibilities for applying MATLAB to each application area. We have focused on basic concepts in the applications, without trying to explain all theory behind the examples.

Sensor fusion deals with merging information from two or more sensors, where the area of statistical signal processing provides a powerful toolbox to attack both theoretical and practical problems.The objective of this book is to explain state of the art theory and algorithms in statistical sensor fusion, covering estimation, detection and nonlinear filtering theory with applications to localization, navigation and tracking problems. The book starts with a review of the theory on linear and nonlinear estimation, with a focus on sensor network applications. Then, general nonlinear filter theory is surveyed with a particular attention to different variants of the Kalman filter and the particle filter. Complexity and implementation issues are discussed in detail. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is used as a challenging application area of high-dimensional nonlinear filtering problems.The book spans the whole range from mathematical foundations provided in extensive appendices, to real-world problems covered in a part surveying standard sensors, motion models and applications in this field.All models and algorithms are available as object-oriented Matlab code with an extensive data file library, and the examples, which are richly used to illustrate the theory, are supplemented by fully reproducible Matlab code.

What role the state should and can play in bringing about economic development is one of the longest standing debates in the economic sciences. Yet, previous research has mostly focused on how a variety of industrial policies affect static efficiency. Few studies have tried to analyze how industrial policy and government intervention affects dynamic efficiency, i.e. an economys ability to generate lasting economic growth. The present study argues that interventionist industrial policy can only have a positive effect on dynamic efficiency if it manages to resolve market failures. This means that the question of whether a given set of government interventions and industrial policies have speeded up or slowed down development can be answered through a market failure approach. That is, by studying whether the policies could have resolved any market failures that negatively affect dynamic efficiency. The study also theoretically identifies a number of such generic market failures. The study then uses a market failure approach to analyze Malaysias industrial policies vis-à-vis the domestic palm oil industry. A previous study has claimed that the policies vis-à-vis this industry represent perhaps the foremost example of successful industrial policy in Malaysia. The present study challenges this view. It argues that, while there are isolated examples of industrial policies vis-à-vis the palm oil industry that might have increased both static and dynamic efficiency by resolving market failures, it is at the moment not possible to conclude that the net effect of the policies have been positive, or that dynamic efficiency would have been significantly lower had the government opted for a laissez-faire industrial policy.
