The subject of the apallic syndrome is one which has long been familiar to me, although I have not personally studied it as deeply as I would have wished. I became acquainted with this syndrome long before the last war, when my neurosurgical colleague Hugh Cairns (1952), made his pioneer contribution under the term "akinetic mutism" . This was an ar­ resting title, but it was one which did not altogether satisfy some of his colleagues, includ­ ing myself. We found it difficult to suggest an alternative. That is one reason why I wel­ come the expression "apallic syndrome" . Forensic practice has forced me from time to time to consider rather more deeply this distressing syndrome, and to try and marshal my ideas in a form which would satisfy my colleagues in the legal profession. More than once I have been instructed to make a medico­ legal assessment of these unfortunate patients. The points which have concerned my lawyer friends have not been matters of diagnosis, or of morbid anatomy, or of etiology. The fac­ tual problem which has been put before me was to make some approximate assessment as to the expectation of life. Vague guess-work is unacceptable in such circumstances. What the lawyers require is a precise and dogmatic answer.

Mathematische Modellierung erhält als Gegenstand des Unterrichts an Schulen und Hochschulen ein immer stärkeres Gewicht. Hierfür gibt es gute Gründe: Fragestellungen der Natur-, Technik- und Gesellschaftswissenschaften ebenso wie Aufgaben in Industrie, Wirtschaft und Verwaltung werden zunehmend – und in vielen Bereichen bereits überwiegend – unter Verwendung mathematischer Modelle unterschiedlichster Komplexitätsstufen bearbeitet. Modellierung, also die Herstellung eines formalen Abbilds eines Teilaspekts der Wirklichkeit, und die anschließende Simulation des realen Prozesses zumeist auf dem Computer gehören heute zu den Standardwerkzeugen einer hochtechnisierten Gesellschaft. Das Buch bietet eine Einführung in dieses komplexe Gebiet. In zwölf Fallstudien werden mathematische Modelle unterschiedlichen Schwierigkeitsgrades entwickelt, mathematisch analysiert und hinsichtlich der Relevanz für den jeweiligen realen Gegenstandsbereich untersucht.

Emil Kraepelin (15. Februar 1856-7. 0ktober 1926) hat Erinnerungen hinterlassen, die bisher nicht veröffentlicht worden sind. Mitarbeiter und Kollegen Kraepelins aus den letzten Jahren vor seinem Tod und Familien­ angehörige wußten von dem Lebensbericht. Da sie sich jedoch nicht sicher waren, ob diese Erinnerungen einem größeren Publikum zugänglich ge­ macht werden sollten, blieben die Erinnerungen bisher unveröffentlicht. Bei einer Gedenkfeier aus Anlaß der 50. Wiederkehr des Todestags von Emil Kraepelin in München (1976) stimmten die auf dieser Feier anwesen­ den Nachkommen Kraepelins dem Vorschlag der Herausgeber zu, die "Le­ benserinnerungen" zu publizieren. Dadurch wird erst jetzt mehr über das Le­ ben eines Mannes bekannt, dessen Werk die gesamte Psychiatrie seit Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts entscheidend und nachhaltig beeinflußt hat. Wenn man die Lebenserinnerungen liest, wird man sich eingestehen, daß man im Grunde wenig über die Persönlichkeit und den Lebensweg dieses großen Psy­ chiaters wußte. Bisher fehlt ja auch immer noch eine breit angelegte und um­ fassende wissenschaftliche Biographie über Kraepelin. Diese Lücke wird nun durch die Veröffentlichung der "Lebenserinnerungen" keineswegs geschlos­ sen. Aber vielleicht wird die Publikation dieser Erinnerungen doch zu einer Biographie anregen, die das rechte Licht auf die Persönlichkeit, den Lebens­ weg und das wissenschaftliche Werk Kraepelins zu werfen vermag.
