The Genuine Educator Does Not Merely Consider Individual Functions Of His Pupil, As One Intending To Teach Him Only To Know Or To Be Capable Of Certain Definite Things; His Concern Is Always A Person As A Whole, But In The Actuality In Which He Lives Before You Now And In His Future Prospects, What He Can Become. Between These Two Modes Of Conceiving The Pupil In His Wholeness There Is A Fundamental Difference. Personality Is Something Which In Its Growth Remains Essentially Outside The Influence Of The Educator; But To Assist In The Moulding Of Character Is His Greatest Task. One May Cultivate And Enhance Personality, But In Education One Can And One Must Aim At Character. The Business Of Education Is Not To Make The Young Perfect In Anyone Of The Sciences, But So To Open And Discipline Their Minds As May Best Make Them Capable Of Any When They Shall Apply Themselves To It With This End In View They Should Be Made To Look In To All Sorts Of Knowledge And Exercise Their Understanding In So Wide And A Variety Or Stock Of Knowledge.
