TOR, the Target of Rapamycin was discovered a little over ten years ago in a genetic screen in S. cerevisiae in search of mutants resistant to the cytostatic effects of the antimycotic, rapamycin. Recent studies have placed TOR at the interface between nutrient sensing and the regulation of major anbolic and catabolic responses. The editors have gathered the leading figures in the field of TOR and its role in cellular homeostasis and human diseases.

This Community meeting has been organised, since over the past 15 years in different countries of Western Europe including Scandinavia, a lot of research has been directed to the summer mastitis problem. Summer mastitis in cattle is a well known disease which, because of its abruptness and the difficulties concerned in defining the predisposing factors and the pathogens involved, is hard to control. Moreover, as it is anticipated that in the transmission of the bacteria one or more dipterans are involved, the complexity in defining the disease and hence co-ordinating our scientific knowledge in relation to practical control was stimulus enough for this workshop to be organised. Our aims can be summarised in the following goals: 1. Exchange of information in the practical, technical and scientific field in order to stimulate a co-ordinated research approach at a time in which the cattle husbandry sector is under great economical stress. 2. Inform research workers from countries where the disease is or seems to be, not endemic, on aspects that might be of interest for them in the approach of comparable problems. 3. To draw up conclusions and recommendations with regard to future research activities in order to avoid needless duplication of effort.

The considerable increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer in children in areas exposed to the fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident has drawn attention to the need for a better understanding of the relationship between radiation exposure (especially from the radionuclides of iodine) and the risk of thyroid cancer. An increase in thyroid cancer has been reported both in patients exposed to therapeutic and diagnostic external radiation, and in the population exposed to radiation from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs. While there is no evidence of a significant increase of this cancer in patients treated with radioactive iodine, an increase in thyroid cancer incidence was found in the Marshall Islands population after exposure to the fallout from a thermonuclear explosion, and now an increase has been observed in children exposed to the fallout from Chernobyl.This volume constitutes the proceedings of the first international conference on the relationship between radiation and thyroid cancer — a very important area of research. Besides addressing the link between radiation and thyroid cancer, it examines the many factors influencing the interactions between radiation and the thyroid cell.
