The book covers general topics of virus classification, transmission, purification, detection, diagnosis and control. It also describes major flower bulb, cut flower, flowering potted plant, and some of the most important bedding plants. The editors provide the most up-to-date information and the principles presented here will be applicable when new methodology is applied to control virus diseases in bulb and flower crops.

It appears that a comprehensive and up-to-date book on the impact of virus diseases on the major crops in developing countries is now much needed, especially as there have been rapid advances in the biological and molecular characterization and detection of the pathogens and possible approaches for their control. On the other hand, the economic losses caused by many of these diseases are tremendous and much of the accumulated knowledge to diminish the crop losses has not filtered through, or cannot be applied. This book is focused on the important crops. Each chapter on a specific crop will include inter alia, geographical distribution, the viruses - symptoms, damage, detection - a brief description of the viruses concerned, and present and future ways for their control. Experts from India, Nigeria, UK, USA, France, Germany, Peru, Japan, Australia, Netherlands, Venezuela, Kazakhstan and Israel (many of them from the International Research Institutions) have contributed chapters to this book.We believe that the book will be of major interest to all those interested in crop production and their protection from viruses in developing countries including researchers and students, general practitioners and developing agencies.

Over the course of evolution most plants have acquired the ability to defend themselves against most groups of pathogens, including the viruses. Many antiviral resistance phenomena have been known and studied for decades but, until recently, understanding of their underlying mechanisms has lagged behind. These phenomena include resistance to infection, resistance to virus translocation through the plant, recovery from infection and genetically defined resistance, together with the associated phenomena of the local lesion response, and induced, or acquired, resistance. The identification and cloning of plant resistance genes, characterization of downstream signaling components, and especially the explosion of data regarding gene-silencing mechanisms, has led to rapid progress in the investigation of natural resistance phenomena. Meanwhile, in plant virology there has been remarkable progress in the arenas of replication, movement proteins and plasmodesmatal gating, and in the discovery of gene silencing suppressors. Therefore, it seemed timely and appropriate to link older but still important data on the well known, ‘classical’ resistance phenomena with the new information that has emerged during the last decade or so. We hope that this book will inspire further research in this area, as resistance presents the most economical and environmentally sound approach to control plant virus diseases. Future technologies that emerge from this research might include an improved ability to introduce resistance genes into virus-susceptible, agronomically important cultivars, to improve current pathogen-derived resistance strategies using our new knowledge of small interfering and microRNAs, or to develop targeted chemical treatments.

In the last four decades of the twentieth century the use of sweetpotato was diversified beyond their classification as subsistence, food security, and famine-relief crop. In developing countries they serve both as human food and for feeding livestock. In Western countries they appeal to health conscious consumers because of their nutritional aspects. The sweetpotato is very high in nutritive value, and merits wider use on this account alone. The book has 2 parts. A general one giving up-to-date information on the history, botany, cultivars, genetic engineering, propagation, diseases and pests, nutritional data and marketing; and a second part presenting data on sweetpotato growing practices in different areas of the world. The information should be useful to researchers, practitioners and crop administers in different countries.

Potatoes, a major vegetatively-propagated crop, has been closely linked with plant virus research during the last 8 decades because, without their effective control potato viruses can cause considerable losses of crop quality and yield. Such research has resulted in marked advances in diagnosis, from relatively simple biological and serological tests to electron microscopy, sophisticated serological procedures and, more recently, the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nucleic acid hybridization methods. Associated tissue culture research during the past forty years or so has resulted in the successful production of virus-free plants from potato cultivars that were totally infected. Nevertheless, in many countries the high incidence of virus infection still causes considerable yield losses. Because of their importance, potato viruses have also long been important subjects for research; much is thus now known about their intrinsic biological and physico-chemical properties, genomes, gene functions, virus-vector relationships (including specific sites of interaction between viral coat protein and the vector) and their potential as vehicles for transformation.
