From classical mechanics and classical electrodynamics to modern quantum mechanics many physical phenomena are formulated in terms of similar partial differential equations while boundary conditions determine the specifics of the problem. This 45th anniversary edition of the advanced book classic Mathematical Methods for Physics demonstrates how many physics problems resolve into similar inhomogeneous partial differential equations and the mathematical techniques for solving them. The text has three parts: Part I establishes solving the homogenous Laplace and Helmholtz equations in the three main coordinate systems, rectilinear, cylindrical, and spherical and develops the solution space for series solutions to the Sturm-Liouville equation, indicial relations, and the expansion of orthogonal functions including spherical harmonics and Fourier series, Bessel, and Spherical Bessel functions. Many examples with figures are provided including electrostatics, wave guides and resonant cavities, vibrations of membranes, heat flow, potential flow in fluids, and plane and spherical waves. In Part II the inhomogeneous equations are addressed where source terms are included for Poisson's equation, the wave equation, and the diffusion equation. Coverage includes many examples from averaging approaches for electrostatics and magnetostatics, from Green function solutions for time independent and time dependent problems, and from integral equation methods. In Part III complex variable techniques are presented for solving integral equations involving Cauchy Residue theory, contour methods, analytic continuation, and transforming the contour; for addressing dispersion relations; for revisiting special functions in the complex plane; and for transforms in the complex plane including Green’s functions and Laplace transforms.Key Features:Mathematical Methods for Physics creates a strong, solid anchor of learning and is useful for referenceLecture note style suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students to learn many techniques for solving partial differential equations with boundary conditionsMany examples across various subjects of physics in classical mechanics, classical electrodynamics, and quantum mechanicsUpdated typesetting and layout for improved clarityThis book, in lecture note style with updated layout and typesetting, is suitable for advanced undergraduate, graduate students, and as a reference for researchers. It has been edited and carefully updated by Gary Powell.

Designed for those who want to gain an understanding of the fundamental concepts and techniques used in financial management. An underlying premise of the book is that the objective of the firm is to maximize value or wealth. Drawing on a wealth of experience in the academic and professional worlds, the authors discuss how firms can accomplish this objective by making appropriate investment and financing decisions. Bridging the gap between financial theory and practice, the authors present fundamental concepts in an intuitive and nontechnical way, and provide numerous practical financial tips to readers. The focus is on current practice, using results from recent surveys to show the most popular techniques and approaches used by financial managers today. A range of instructor’s resources are available at the accompanying website. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/baker for full details.

Victorian Chelsea was a thriving commercial and residential development, known for its grand houses and pleasant garden squares. Violent crime was unheard of in this leafy suburb. The double murder of an elderly man of God and his faithful housekeeper in two ferocious, bloody attacks in May of 1870 therefore shook the residents of Chelsea to the core. This volume examines the extraordinary case, one which could have leapt straight from the pen of Agatha Christie herself: the solving of the crime relied on the discovery of a packing box dripping with blood, and the capture of a mysterious French nephew. Compiled by a former detective, it looks at the facts: no direct evidence to place the suspect at either of the crime scenes; no weapon recovered; no motive substantiated. It lets you, the reader, decide: would you, on the evidence presented, have sent the same man to the gallows?

Tillfälligt slut
Two aristocratic brothers executed for forgery in 1776; a young woman who spurned the advances of a one-legged admirer, battered to death in her Camden Town home in 1926; a pornographer shot dead by the Krays in 1966 for having ‘too much lip’ … Take a terrifying day-by-day journey and experience hundreds of shocking real-life crimes – poisoning, throat slashing, stabbing and shooting all demonstrating the evil that men (and women) do. This volume features many infamous cases while also exposing some of London’s most violent crimes for the first time, and the punishments meted out to those responsible. Death Diary examines the most interesting, bizarre and audacious crimes to blight England’s first city.Gary Powell brings his thirty years of experience as a detective (including anti-terrorism work at New Scotland Yard) to this catalogue of some of the most hateful and shocking crimes committed in the capital over the last 400 years.

Two elderly shopkeepers bludgeoned to death, the only evidence – a smudged thumbprint inside a cashbox. A Quaker poisons his mistress in Slough and, confident he will evade justice, arrives at Paddington station unaware modern technology had alerted police who lay in wait. Great Britain has led the world in crime-detection methods and the forensic sciences; this volume examines real criminal cases that have tested the legality and admissibility of these crime-fighting methods as they pass through the British legal system.Together with many other examples encompassing police corruption, ballistics, entomology and riot, to name but a few, this volume demonstrates how crime has influenced present-day policing methods, Britain’s criminal justice system and ultimately the detection and conviction of some of this country’s most infamous men and women.

DI Ryan McNally stands in the dock at Southwark Crown Court accused of a vicious assault; he awaits the jury’s verdict. A guilty decision would be career-ending and might send him to prison. The British Transport Police’s Major Investigations Team are called in to investigate the discovery of human remains deposited in a left luggage facility at Liverpool Street Station and on the backseat of a London black cab at Victoria’s busy bus terminal. The team’s priority is the identification of the victim. Their only clues are a wedding band and a tattoo. McNally’s detectives have proven they can work under the most stressful of circumstances in Britain’s most unique policing environment; but with ever-growing tensions between some of its members reaching boiling point they need to come together quickly to meet their toughest challenge yet. The Cutting Room offers a fast-paced relentless narrative taking the reader on a very dark journey of shocking twists and turns with very little light at the end of the tunnel.
