Spirit Faces presents an outstanding collection of 75 masks by 23 contemporary Native American artists. These breathtakingly beautiful and powerful masks, all illustrated in color, depict creatures such as Eagle or Killer Whale, natural elements and forces such as Moon or Weather, humans, and supernatural beings such as Thunderbird or the Chief of the Undersea. Masks are an important part of ceremonial life on the Northwest Coast; they make the supernatural world visible and bring it to life in dance dramas performed at feasts and potlatches, or at winter ceremonies held by secret societies.Some masks embody mythology or history. Others depict shamanic experiences, or are portrait masks that represent personal experience. The most elaborate are transformation masks, which are used to display the transition from one form to another, such as Wolf to Human. At the high point of the dance, the dancer will open the outer mask to reveal another one inside. The introduction by Gary Wyatt outlines the place of art inside Northwest Coast societies and the place of Northwest Coast art in the outside art world. He also explains the importance, meaning, and ceremonial use of masks. Each mask is accompanied by the artist’s own words describing its creation and meaning.

This first-ever monograph of a Haida argillite carver features nearly 200 artworks by Kihl'yahda Christian White, most never seen in public before, along with the artist’s telling of the supernatural stories that inspired them.Kihl’yahda Christian White is often described by his peers as a “natural-born carver.” Since first picking up a knife as a teenager five decades ago, he has become one of the most accomplished artists on the Northwest Coast and a fierce advocate of Haida culture. At home in Haida Gwaii, he is known for monumental cedar poles, longhouses, and canoes that bring the entire community together in celebration.Beyond Haida Gwaii, he is best known for intricate carvings in argillite, or “black shale,” the fine-grained stone found only on Haida Gwaii, its use strictly regulated by the Haida Nation. This collection features four peer-reviewed reviews on intercropping.The first chapter summarises data from over 50 field experiments undertaken since 2001 on cereal–grain legume intercropping using spring and winter cereal–grain legume intercrops. The chapter addresses the effects of intercropping on yields and quality, the agronomical performance of intercropping and cultivation practices in intercropping.The second chapter reviews the existing evidence on systems productivity, resource capture and use efficiency, between intercrops and sole crops for maize–legume-dominated cropping systems. The chapter also considers intercropping under different conditions, including those with heightened or reduced levels of moisture and nitrogen.The third chapter considers the effects of crop rotation and intercropping management practices on soil health, focussing on their impact on crop productivity, soil health enhancement and stability. The chapter also highlights the importance of leguminous crops and soil organic matter in maintaining healthy soils, sustaining crop productivity and enhancing biodiversity.The final chapter provides an overview of the economic and ecological benefits, challenges and major considerations of implementing alley cropping systems within North America.
