This book examines what international human rights law has gained from the new elements in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). It explores how the CRPD is intricately bound up with other international instruments by studying the relationship between the Convention rights and those protected by other human rights treaties, as well as the overall objectives of the UN. Using a social model lens on disability, the book shows how theConvention sheds new light on the very notion of human rights.The book provides a theoretical framework which explicitly integrates disability into international human rights law. Article 33 of the CRPD requires that, for persons with disabilities, States parties 1) designate focal points and, if required, coordination mechanisms; 2) designate or establish independent mechanisms and; 3) guarantee the participation of civil society. The book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the national structures for the implementation and monitoring of the CRPD. This volume brings together insights and experiences from across the world on the actual and potential role of national human rights institutions with respect to economic, social and cultural rights.
