Innovation is critical to growth and development in Africa. In the context of a continent characterized by fast growing economies as well as an array of socioeconomic challenges, such as high levels of poverty, innovation in Africa must be understood in an encompassing manner. Africa needs to foster the emergence of its own Silicon Valley, but it must also foster the invention and adoption of more efficient wood-fueled traditional stoves that limit deforestation and combat climate change. This book contains a number of analytical case studies that examine the nature and origins of emerging high-end innovation hubs in Africa. These hubs are both understudied and little known inside and outside the continent. With this analysis, the book intends to highlight and draw lessons from some of the most promising and successful innovation cases in Africa today, exploring the key factors driving their successful emergence, growth and future prospects. Innovation Ecosystems in Africa aims to deepen and broaden the visibility and interrogation of African innovation systems in practice by offering unique analysis of the emergence, growth and future prospects of endogenous innovation practices and lessons across the continent. This book examines the ways in which government-owned technologies (GovTechs) and technologies owned by civil society organisations (CivicTechs) can be integrated into policy processes to enhance interactions between citizens and governments, and ensure effective, efficient, and accountable public service delivery. It takes stock of current technological innovations, and assesses the ways in which they can be aligned with GovTechs and CivicTechs to improve African governments' capacities in public policy and governance processes. The first part of the book traces the emergence of digital technologies in public administration, and assesses their benefits and challenges, especially in the Global South. The following chapters present case studies from across Africa and various policy sectors to show how GovTechs and CivicTechs operate. They demonstrate how digital platforms can be used to protect data, enhance democracy, improve food systems, and reduce corruption.The book will appeal to all those interested in public policy, public administration, emerging technologies, and African politics.
