As cities become increasingly congested, current transport patterns are unsustainable: heavy in energy use, high in economic and environmental cost, and exacerbating inequity between those who can access high-speed travel and those who cannot. Good urban planning develops human-scale cities and encourages modes such as bicycles, increased zones exclusive to pedestrians within cities, and changed fiscal policies to incentivize public over private transport. Equally, it requires good engineering design to manage road use.Sustainable Approaches to Urban Transport brings together contributions from leading international experts in urban planning, transport, and governance who suggest changes to make our cities more sustainable in the face of climate change. All professionals working in transport and engineering and planning students will find an overview of a broad field in this interdisciplinary collection of essays.

Transportation planning and traffic safety are crucial topics in discussions surrounding climate change and the negative health effects of transportation in low and middle-income countries. The updated edition of this book builds upon the foundation of the first edition, which was originally based on lectures given during the Annual International Course on Transportation Planning and Traffic Safety starting in 1991. In addition to the original content which has gone through a thorough update, this new edition includes new chapters focusing on road safety management and governance, the safety of vulnerable road users (VRUs), and the impact of climate change on travel behavior and safety. Furthermore, the book addresses safety concerns related to motorised two wheeler safety and public transport systems, highlighting the emerging risks in modern traffic systems.Transport Planning and Traffic Safety: Making Cities, Roads, and Vehicles Safer, Second Edition offers a comprehensive public health and systems approach to road safety, navigating the interdisciplinary elements of traffic crashes. New to the second edition includes chapters on traffic planning, design principles, institutional mechanisms, human body models, and pre-hospital care for road traffic victims. Readers will find examples of best practices from countries that have successfully reduced traffic crashes, with a focus on how these practices can be implemented in low-income countries. The text engages policymakers and technical professionals by applying internationally recognized theoretical principles to develop solutions tailored to local needs. Each original chapter has undergone a thorough review and updates to ensure accuracy and relevance. The new edition also integrates checklists and audit processes for highway safety practitioners, along with principles and concepts related to public transport safety. This interdisciplinary book is designed for a wide range of professionals, including quality control and safety engineers, traffic and road engineers, vehicle designers, law enforcement officials, and transport planners.

In recognition of the importance of road safety as a major health issue, the World Health Organization has declared 2011-2021 the Decade of Safety Action. Several countries in Europe, North America, and Asia have been successful in reducing fatalities and injuries due to road traffic crashes. However, many low-income countries continue to experience high rates of traffic fatalities and injuries.Transport Planning and Traffic Safety: Making Cities, Roads, and Vehicles Safer offers a source book for road safety training courses as well as an introductory textbook for graduate-level courses on road safety taught in engineering institutes. It brings together the international experiences and lessons learned from countries which have been successful in reducing traffic crashes and their applicability in low-income countries. The content is based on lectures delivered during an international course on transportation planning and traffic safety, sponsored annually by the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Programme (TRIPP) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The book is interdisciplinary and aimed at professionals traffic and road engineers, vehicle designers, law enforcers, and transport planners. The authors examine trends in performance of OECD countries and highlight the public health and systems approach of traffic safety with the vulnerable road user in focus. Topics include land use (transportation planning, mobility, and safety), safety education and legislation, accident analysis, road safety research, human tolerance to injury, vehicle design, safety in construction zones, safety in urban areas, traffic calming, public transportation, safety laws and policies, and pre-hospital care of the injured.

This book is a Festschrift for Professor Dinesh Mohan. The book presents select proceedings of the Dinesh Mohan Memorial Symposium organised by the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Centre, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in September, 2022. The over-arching theme of “the right to safety by design” of thevulnerable in today’s urban society is the core concern of this book; sustainable transportation, built-form, and clean air are the main concerns that are intrinsically related to this central theme. The promotion of active transport has multiple health issues like cleaner air; integrated infrastructure in urban areas with an emphasis on bicycling and walking in conjunction with public transport; traffic calming; and equity in the community design with an increase in actual and perceived safety and an improvement in the environment. The book highlights the need of policy makers to address the complexities involved in ensuring safe, sustainable urban mobility for all. It provides guidance to researchers to explore the structural and systemic causes of problems in urban mobility and address them through engineering and design. This book provides a reference text for researchers in the area of urban transport, road safety, sustainable urbanisation, transport and health, public transport, environment, and pollution.
