Att vara musiklärare innebär så klart att kunna musik, men en bra musiklärare har också förmågan att skapa förutsättningar för andras lärande. Det är många val som måste göras och många hänsyn att ta så att eleverna kan utvecklas musikaliskt och mänskligt. Det är detta didaktiken handlar om.  Att vara musiklärare innebär att navigera i ett komplext landskap av möjligheter och begränsningar. En medvetenhet om de olika faktorer som påverkar musikundervisningens vad, hur och varför kan bidra till att musiklärare får ett ökat handlingsutrymme i sin yrkesroll, och på ett mer kvalificerat sätt kan möjliggöra gynnsamt musikaliskt lärande.  Musikundervisningens didaktik tar avstamp i didaktiska frågor, samt pedagogiska och musikpedagogiska teorier, för att diskutera grundförutsättningar i musikaliska lärandesituationer – vare sig de äger rum i grundskola, kulturskola, kör eller musikundervisning i andra, mer informella sammanhang. Denna första svenska utgåva av den norska klassikern Musikkundervisningens didaktikk är en översättning och en anpassning till svenska sammanhang genomförd av tio svenska musikpedagogiska forskare. Avsikten är att lägga en grund för reflektioner och diskussioner om musikpedagogiska praxis och således bidra till en professionalisering av musikläraryrket.
