Tillfälligt slut
This third impression of the second edition was originally published in 1963, and in this classic study George Unwin attempted for the first time to bridge the gap between the economic development of medieval England and the England of the eighteenth century with a detailed study of the evolution and growth of the London Livery Companies and the early craft guilds. He discusses at length the various amalgamations of the crafts, the early joint-stock enterprises, protectionism under James I, and the early development of the Trade Union Movement. In his introduction, Professor T. S. Ashton shows the importance of this pioneer study in the light of the industrial development today of the newly emergent nations.

It is made up of eighteen pieces by individuals from a wide range of backgrounds who discuss their thoughts and beliefs on the subject. Contributors come from varied disciplines including literature, theology, politics, journalism and science. Some affirm their faith in the human spirit and in life-enhancing activity, some, including a distinguished surgeon, see their lives in terms of service, or are more concerned with current social questions, and some focus on the importance of the individual. What I Believe is an intriguing text that becomes, as one reads it, a growing revelation of how men and women find the meaning of life.

These important essays, first published in 1918, consider the various economic aspects of the reign of Edward III. They support George Unwin’s contention that the measures of the king and parliament were mainly opportunist rather than the expression of a definite financial policy.
