First published in 1966. Despite the intense interest in Coleridge in the twentieth century, this book represents the first study of Coleridges poetry to be published in Britain. This 1965 second edition is a total revision of the 1958 edition. It adds scores of additional titles to the bibliography and makes a number of changes throughout in light of the new knowledge since the first edition. The Concise Bibliography begins with a general introductory section and the rest of the book is divided into six time periods. Each section begins with general bibliographies, literary histories and general works. Then the principal authors are listed alphabetically. Each has two sections, works 'by' and works 'about'. The first section gives the main works, with dates and editors. This is annotated by Mr Watson where necessary. In the second edition the emphasis is on books rather than articles. The authors chosen are British (although James and Eliot are included), not American or Commonwealth; but the biographical, critical and historical works take account of the scholarship of other English-speaking countries.

This is not a random collection of essays, but a book on a single theme. Written by separate hands, mainly by literary critics at Cambridge, it was planned as a whole and executed with a common purpose: to produce the first literary study of the English moralists of the seventeenth century to the beginning of the twentieth. The authors share two convictions: they believe that the study of literature demands an understanding of whatever moral philosophy is embodied in it; and they believe that philosophical writings are capable of being tested by the techniques of literary criticism. In this book, such works as Bacon's Advancement of Learning, Hobbes's Leviathan, and Hume's Enquiries are viewed as whole works, not as repositories of philosophical propositions, nor as episodes in the history of English thought.

Critical theorists in our time sought foundations of knowledge because they knew there were none to be found, and critical scepticism became a convenient way of burying evidence and saving face. By now, however, no-one is interested, the audience has gone home, and the case for studying literature needs to begin again. It cannot start too soon. In Take Back the Past, George Watson considers the reasons for the apparent failure of the previous centuryís critics to find the theoretical foundations of critical judgement. He asks why is it more fashionable to look knowing than to know, and cites political and historical reasons for this lapse in knowledge and critical thinking. In this new study, a worthy addition to his work on the subject, Watson contemplates the collapse of socialism in the late 20th Century and how it lead to the denial of knowledge and the general degeneration of literary thought. Marx and Engels publicly advocated genocide in 1849; Ruskin called himself a violent Tory and a King's man; and Shaw held the working classes in utter contempt. Drawing on an impressive range of sources from Robert Owen to Ken Livingstone, the author demonstrates that socialism was a conservative, nostalgic reaction to the radicalism of capitalism, and not always supposed to be advantageous to the poor. There have even been socialist monarchs - Napoleon III was one. Two chapters of the book study Hitler's claim that 'the whole of National Socialism' was based on Marx, and bring to light the common theoretical basis of the beliefs of Stalin and Hitler which led to death camps. As a literary critic, George Watson's concern is to pay proper respect to the works of the founding fathers of socialism, to attend to what they say and not what their modern disciples wish they had said. The dust grows thick on many of these tomes, while present-day socialists follow a few ossified slogans plucked selectively from the best-known books. Socialist ideas are now rescued from priggish and woolly-thinking moralists so that genuine debate can be revived. This invigorating book forces the reader to abandon long-standing assumptions in political thought. It is certain to ruffle feathers, blue as well as red.
