Mittelalter hat Konjunktur, die Staufer sind ein Mythos und Konradin, der "letzte Staufer", ist bis heute lebendig. In dieser Biografie geht es um mehr als das kurze, nur 16-jährige Leben Corradinos, das 1252 auf Burg Wolfstein bei Landshut begann und 1268 in Neapel unter dem Henkerschwert endete. Es geht um die Machtspiele jener Zeit, die rund um den Königssohn, den Enkel Kaiser Friedrichs II., deutlich werden und eng verwoben sind mit dem Vormund des kleinen Königs, dem bayerischen Herzog Ludwig II. dem Strengen. Es geht um das Ende der Idee vom hochmittelalterlichen Universalreich und um die ersten Anfänge moderner Nationalstaaten. Und es geht um ein tragisches, symbolhaft wirkendes Fürstenschicksal, das viele Jahrhunderte in höchst unterschiedlicher Weise bewegt hat – bis in unsere Gegenwart.

Seit Urzeiten war die Region an der Donau Einfallstor für immer neue Völker, für zahllose technische und kulturelle Neuerungen aus dem Mittelmeerraum. Der Fall des Eisernen Vorhangs hat Niederbayern in jüngster Zeit seine zentrale Vermittlerrolle zwischen Westen und Osten in Europa zurückgegeben.
