Basierend auf den Befunden qualitativer Interviews und einer bundesweiten standardisierten Erhebung kann gezeigt werden, dass Heranwachsende hier nachhaltige und exklusive Lernerfahrungen machen können. Neben sozialen und persönlichkeitsbildenden Eigenschaften und Fähigkeiten werden in einem freiwilligen Engagement insbesondere Organisations-, Leitungs-, Team- und Gremienkompetenzen entwickelt. In ihrer Jugend engagierte Erwachsene verfügen über mehr Kompetenzen, sind stärker politisch interessiert, gesellschaftlich engagiert und auch beruflich erfolgreicher als die Vergleichsgruppe der früher Nicht-Engagierten.
