The philosopher Epictetus’ Encheiridion (“Little Handbook”), written c. AD 100, is one of the most influential works of Stoic philosophy. The Greek text presented here is the first one to be based an a full evaluation of the complete tradition.

The absence of a trustworthy critical edition of the Greek text of Philostratus’ Life of Apollonius of Tyana has long been felt, the most recent critical edition being the editio minor prepared by C. L. Kayser, published in 1870. The present critical edition aims at remedying this defect. It is based on a full evaluation of all available sources, which comprise the extant medieval manuscripts and the complete indirect tradition. The critical apparatus reports all the variant readings of the primary manuscripts and of the indirect tradition. It also contains numerous conjectures made before and after Kayser’s edition, both published and unpublished, a number of which have been adopted in the Greek text. With regard to the constitution of the text full account is taken of the idiosyncratic Greek of Philostratus. In addition to the critical apparatus there is an apparatus fontium and an apparatus testimoniorum. The edition is concluded by an index fontium and an index nominum. This edition caters for the needs of students of Ancient Greek literature and culture in general, and especially of those interested in the Second Sophistic and the works of Flavius Philostratus.

Diese kritische Edition von Epiktets Encheiridion ist die erste, die auf einer vollständigen Wertung der gesamten Überlieferung basiert. Diese Überlieferung umfasst fast 60 erhaltene griechische Handschriften. Daneben sind die drei christlichen Bearbeitungen aus byzantinischer Zeit berücksichtigt worden, für die ebenfalls sämtliche handschriftliche Überlieferungen herangezogen wurden, sowie der Kommentar des Simplicius und die vollständige indirekte Überlieferung.Der griechische Text wird von vier Apparaten begleitet, in denen dem Benutzer der Inhalt der verschiedenen Zweige der Handschriften, die Parallelstellen aus den Diatriben, die Verweise auf die indirekten Überlieferungen sowie die direkt überlieferten Textvarianten dargeboten werden. In the preface to the edition the publication of a companion volume was announced. This book fulfils this promise. After an introduction dealing with the transmission of the text and with Philostratus’ Greek there follows an extensive series of critical notes in which a large number of editorial choices are explained. In these notes much attention is paid both to the morphological and syntactic peculiarities of Greek of the Imperial period in general and to the idiosyncratic syntax employed by Philostratus in particular. The notes deal with every aspect of the text, ranging from the use of particles and word order to moods and tenses, and containing ample discussions of conjectures and interpretations of earlier scholars. This book is an indispensable working tool for scholars using the new Teubner edition of the Life of Apollonius.
