This book contains a selection of papers presented at a Symposium on coding theory: "3 Journées sur le Codage", held November 24-26, 1986, in Cachan near Paris, France. It gives an account of the state of the art of research in France on Coding, ranging from rather theoretical topics like algebraic geometry and combinatorial coding to applications like modulation, real-space decoding and implementation of coding algorithms on microcomputers. The symposium was the second one of this type. With its broad spectrum, it was a unique opportunity for contacts between university and industry on the topics of information and coding theory.

This book presents a selection of the papers presented at EUROCODE '90, the symposium on coding theory held in Udine, Italy, November 1990. It gives the state of the art on coding in Europe and ranges from theoretical top- ics like algebraic geometry and combinatorial coding to applications like modulation, real-space decoding and VLSI implementation. The book is divided into eight sections: - Algebraic codes - Combinatorial codes - Geometric codes - Protection of information - Convolutional codes - Information theory - Modulation - Applications of coding. Five of the sections are introduced by an invited contribution.

This volume presents the proceedings of the firstFrench-Soviet workshop on algebraic coding, held in Paris inJuly 1991. The idea for the workshop, born in Leningrad (nowSt. Petersburg) in 1990, was to bring together some of thebest Soviet coding theorists. Scientists from France,Finland, Germany, Israel, Italy, Spain, and the UnitedStates also attended. The papers in the volume fall rather naturally into fourcategories:- Applications of exponential sums- Covering radius- Constructions-Decoding.

This volume is the proceedings of the 10th InternationalSymposium on Applied Algebra, Algebraic Algorithms andError-Correcting Codes (AAECC 10),held in Puerto Rico, May1993. The aim of the AAECC meetings is to attract high-levelresearch papers and to encourage cross-fertilization amongdifferent areas which share the use of algebraic methods andtechniques for applications in the sciences of computing,communications, and engineering. The AAECC symposia are mainly devoted to research in codingtheory and computer algebra. The theoryof error-correctingcodes deals with the transmission of information in thepresence of noise. Coding is the systematic use ofredundancy in theformation of the messages to be sent so asto enable the recovery of the information present originallyafter it has been corrupted by (not too much)noise. Computer algebra is devoted to the investigation ofalgorithms, computational methods, software systems andcomputer languages, oriented to scientific computationsperformed on exact and often symbolic data, by manipulatingformal expressions by means of the algebraic rules theysatisfy.Questions of complexity and cryptography arenaturally linked with both coding theory and computeralgebra and represent an important share of the area coveredby AAECC.

This volume presents the proceedings of the first French-Israeli Workshop on Algebraic Coding, which took place in Paris in July 1993. The workshop was a continuation of a French-Soviet Workshop held in 1991 and edited by the same board. The thoroughly refereed papers in this volume are grouped into parts on: convolutional codes and special channels, covering codes, cryptography, sequences, graphs and codes, sphere packings and lattices, and bounds for codes.
