Mineralogical-sedimentological and geochemical investigations in combination with pollen data of a 12.7-m-long dated sediment core from Lake Silvana, SE Brazil, permit the reconstruction of the climatic history over the past 10,000 years. The lowermost section (I) reflects a coarse paleosol-type sediment with abundant plant debris and rootlets; pollen indicates grassland vegetation. Section II represents fine-grained lake sediments; pollen indicates a savanna-like vegetation. Section III represents a pollen-free, coarse-grained allogenic sediment deposited under high transportation energy (increased precipitation). Section IV, a greenish sequence with increasing C content towards the top, has a pollen spectrum of present-day vegetation (semideciduous forest). The different sediment sections show a connection with erosional phases in the catchment of the lake, based on mineralogy and geochemistry, which are a response to climate development.

Die geowissenschaftliche Umweltforschung nimmt heute innerhalb der Geologie und angrenzender Wissenschaften einen breiten Raum ein. Dieser Tatsache trug die erstmals am 5. und 6. November 1993 in Heidelberg stattfindende gleichnamige Tagung Rechnung. Um den aktuellen Stand dieses Forschungszweigs zu dokumentieren, wurden ausgewählte Beiträge dieser Veranstaltung im vorliegenden Buch publiziert. Autoren aus unterschiedlichen geowissenschaftlichen Disziplinen berichten dabei aus Forschung und Praxis. Sie verdeutlichen auf diese Weise u. a. die Notwendigkeit interdisziplinären Denkens und Arbeitens im Rahmen geowissenschaftlicher Umweltforschung. Für Geologen, Geophysiker, Mineralogen, Geochemiker, Geographen.

In the field of sedimentary research, ever increasing emphasis has been put on the investigations of carbonates and carbonate rocks during the past 30 years. It is thus quite natural that in Central Europe - where c1assical carbonate in­ vestigations have already been carried out 100 years ago - numerous scholars turned to the study of this sediment type. On the occasion of a visiting professorship of G. M. FRIEDMAN at the Labora­ torium für Sedimentforschung, Heidelberg University, a seminar on "Recent Developments of Carbonate Sedimentology in Central Europe" was held in July 1967. 90 persons involved in carbonate investigations participated, and 35 lectures were held. The present volume contains 30 papers summarizing the different subjects of the seminar. Of course these contributions only represent a small part of the work actually performed in the field of carbonate research in Central Europe. We believe, however, that they give a general survey of the work and the working methods employed in the different sectors of carbonate investigations. One of the purposes of the present symposium is to acquaint the English speaking countries with our recent results which usually - due to the language barrier - are not accessible to them.
