Be it the countryside, a town, or a metropolis – communication about our society often centres around spatial issues. In public discourse, key issues of the present day and the future (population growth, competition, climate change etc.) concern specific localities, and societal risks, challenges and potentials are defined within spatial contexts. Cities, villages, and other political and administrative units find themselves positioned within spatially structured ratings and rankings and compared and correlated with similar places elsewhere. Against this background, they strive to shape their global competitive position strategically by defining and enhancing their particular strengths and putting across a positive image.Southern Westphalia, the youngest region in Germany, is currently attracting heightened public attention as the selected region for a structural development programme known as "Regionale 2013". Taking this region as an example, the contributions to this volume explore whether challenges and science-based solutions can be observed here that are also typical in other regions in Germany and beyond. Should this be the case, then science should be able to give sustained support to collective learning processes by drawing attention to the commonalities and particularities of different regions.

Conversion – the deliberate or random utilisation of already existing articles, spaces and resources in innovative practices – is a word that is currently on everybody''s lips at present. Everywhere, professional virtuousos of conversion? transform, convert, recycle and revamped, made use of and put on the market; beyond the consumer mainstream, too, people are tinkering, doing handicrafts, exchanging, patching, manoeuvring, and improvising. Conversion can be for a good cause, can be greatly valued as dynamic and innovative, but can also be put in a bad light for the improper "creative" use of achievements that are in principle quite valuable. The authors of this issue enquire into academic findings on methods and processes of conversion, their causes and consequences in past and present. They discuss current problems in architecture and urban planning, the real estate and financial sectors, art and literature, technological and cultural history, linguistics and mathematics, business and aid organisations, career choice, day-to-day business and private life.

Die Frage, wie wissenschaftliche Schöpfungen durch Prozesse der Gestaltung entstehen und wie sie in der Gestaltung der Welt, im Guten wie im Schlechten, zum Tragen kommen, ist für manche Disziplinen zentral, für andere kann sie eine sinnvolle Horizonterweiterung darstellen. Diese Ausgabe fragt danach, wie in den verschiedenen Fächern gestalterische Probleme gelöst werden und wie in manchen Disziplinen das Gestalten selbst als ein Gegenstand der Wissenschaft untersucht und/oder als Kompetenz entwickelt wird. Die Beiträge dieses Hefts betreffen die Gestaltung als Zielsetzung und Grenzen der Gestaltbarkeit, die Evaluation von Gestaltungsprozess und -ergebnis und die Gestaltungskompetenz und ihre Förderung. Gestalten ist eine Tätigkeit, die der Reflexion und Gestaltung bedarf.

»Vielfalt als Chance« – das ist das Thema dieses Heftes, dem sich Forschende aus allen Fakultäten der Universität Siegen vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Forschungen widmen.Die möglichen Perspektiven auf »Vielfalt« und die Diskussionen um Prozesse der Ausdifferenzierung werden aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen – Philosophie, Geschichtswissenschaft, Erziehungswissenschaft, Informatik, Sozialwissenschaft, Naturwissenschaften, Politikwissenschaft, Rechtswissenschaft, Sprachwissenschaft, Medienwissenschaft, Ingenieurwissenschaft, Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft, Wirtschaftswissenschaft etc. – und im Kontext vielfältiger Fragestellungen aufgezeigt: Inhaltlich wird der Diskurs zur Vielfalt auf Zusammenspiel, Synergie und Nutzen gelenkt. Aber auch die Grenzen von »Vielfalt als Chance« werden ausgelotet.

Sie übertreibt, zieht Bestehendes in Zweifel und stellt es auf den Prüfstand, beinhaltet Misstrauen und Skepsis und kombiniert Argwohn subversiv mit der impliziten Anregung zu einer nicht weiter spezifizierten Verhaltensänderung. Die Ziele, Sinn und Bedeutung der Provokation, ihre Herkunft, zudem die Formen und Mechanismen der Provokation sowie die Reaktionen auf Provokation – dies lässt sich aus vielen universitären Disziplinen heraus untersuchen. Vielfältige Kontexte wie beispielsweise Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft, Politik, aber auch Kunst und Musik und die Naturwissenschaften, eröffnen spannende Perspektiven auf das Thema Provokation."Is everything too well-behaved nowadays?" A provocative question! It exaggerates; puts existing things in doubts; puts everything to the test; it includes distrust and scepticism and subversively combines suspicion with the implicit drive to an undefined change of behaviour. The aims, sense and meaning of provocation, its origin, additionally the forms and mechanisms of provocation as well as the reactions to provocation – this can be analysed with the help of many academic disciplines. Various fields such as society, economics, politics as well as art, music and sciences depict interesting perspectives on the subject of provocation.

Der Fehlerbegriff kann vielseitig interpretiert und bewertet werden: Von der falschen Handlung in Bezug auf das angestrebte Ziel bis zur schrittweisen Erreichung des erwünschten Effekts im Sinne eines Lernens aus Fehlern. Das eine eher negativ und zufällig im Sinne eines Fehlgriffs, eines Lapsus, unter Umständen einer Dummheit, das andere eher positiv und systematisch als ein Lernprozess im Sinne von Versuch und Irrtum. Fehler gehören offensichtlich zum Leben – und zur Forschung, die von Fehlern nicht nur betroffen sein kann, sondern Fehlerarten, Fehleranalyse und -bereinigung sowie Vermeidungsstrategien in ihren Fachgebieten zum Forschungsgegenstand macht und kreativ nutzt.The notion of error can be interpreted and rated in various ways. It can be defined as a wrong action regarding one''s aim or defined as an act of reaching the requested effect gradually while we are learning from our errors. On the one hand, an error can be considered negatively or as something done by accident, in the sense of a blunder, a lapse or even a stupidity. On the other hand, it can be regarded in a positive and systematic manner, as a learning process in the sense of try and error. Obviously, errors are part of every day''s life – and also part of research which is not only affected by mistakes but also makes error types, error analysis and trouble-shooting as well as strategies for avoiding errors a subject of research in their respective research fields and uses it in a creative way.

Vision geht weiter als die Aufnahme optischer Reize aus der realen Welt oder die gedankliche Vorstellung von etwas Sichtbarem, das man sich vor Augen führt: Sie umfasst die innere interpretative Transformation des wie auch immer »Gesehenen« in eine gegenwartsbezogene Erscheinung oder in eine zukunftsbezogene Vorstellung. Vision als »Brücke in die Zukunft« – wie tragfähig ist sie in der heutigen Welt? Autorinnen und Autoren aller Fakultäten der Universität Siegen erzählen Visionen der Vergangenheit nach (aus Literatur und Philosophie), beschreiben gegenwärtige Visionen (vor allem in Architektur und Wirtschaft) und verfassen eigene Visionen für die Zukunft (auf den Feldern Gesundheit, Bildung, Erziehung, Politik und Gesellschaft).Vision is more than just the perception of optical signals from the real world or the mental imagination of something visible: Vision comprehends the inner interpretative transformation of something "seen" into a present-related appearance or a future-related conception. How stable is vision as a "bridge to the future" in our modern world? Authors from various disciplines of the University of Siegen describe visions from the past (literature and philosophy), the present (especially architecture and economics) and express their own visions for the future (health, education, training, politics and society).

Unsere Welt ist durch Tempo, Fortschrittsstreben und ein »Immer-Weiter« geprägt. Stillstand, von dem es heißt, er sei Rückschritt, passt hier auf den ersten Blick so gar nicht hinein: Geht es doch nicht nur um die bewusste Verlangsamung einer Dynamik, sondern um deren Unterbrechung. Insbesondere ein »verordneter« Stillstand infolge der Corona-Pandemie hat ein bislang unbeachtetes Thema in den Vordergrund gerückt. Doch schauen wir uns aufmerksam um: Stillstand – teils erwünscht, teils unerwünscht oder gar unvermeidlich – geschieht durchaus häufiger, als wir es wahrnehmen. DIAGONAL 2021 spürt dem Stillstand in Kunst und Kultur, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, Erziehung und Bildung nach.Our world is driven by speed, pursuit for progress and an attitude "to always go a step further". Standstill which is perceived as a step backwards does not really fit in here at first glance. Since it is not about the deliberate deceleration of a dynamic but its interruption. Particularly, an "enacted" standstill due to the Corona pandemic has brought a hitherto unnoticed subject into the spotlight. However, a standstill – in parts desired, in parts not or even inevitable – happens much more often than we perceive. DIAGONAL 2021 focuses on standstill in art and culture, economy and society, and education and teaching.

Erinnerung prägt das tägliche Handeln von Individuen, Gruppen und ganzen Gesellschaften. Wie essenziell der Blick zurück ist, lässt sich erahnen, wenn man die Folgen sieht, die ihr Wegfall etwa infolge von Demenzkrankheiten auslöst. In Erinnerung gerufen werden alltägliche Dinge ebenso wie vergangene Ereignisse, deren Aktivierung im Gedächtnis zur Selbstvergewisserung, Identitätsstabilisierung und Verortung in der Zeit dient. Was erinnert wird oder nicht erinnert werden soll, steht in Gruppen nie ein für alle Mal fest, sondern wird stets aufs Neue verhandelt, bevor es in vielfältige Strukturen des Gedenkens überführt wird. DIAGONAL 2022 ruft »Erinnerung« als Thema unterschiedlichster wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen auf.Memory shapes the daily actions of individuals, groups and entire societies. How essential it is to look back can be imagined when one sees the consequences of its disappearance, for example as a result of dementia. Everyday things are recalled as well as past events, the activation of which in the memory serves for self-assurance, identity stabilization and localization in time. What is remembered or not to be remembered is never fixed once and for all in groups, but is constantly renegotiated before it is transferred into diverse structures of commemoration. DIAGONAL 2022 calls upon "memory" as a topic of the most diverse academic disciplines.
