Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Mittelalter und der Frühen Neuzeit, also jenen Epochen, die bislang meist als 'Vorlauf' für die emotionen- und geschlechtergeschichtlich bedeutender scheinende Neuzeit verstanden wurden. Hier wird dagegen anhand von literarischen und ikonographischen Quellen untersucht, welche epochenspezifischen Gendernormen im Bereich der Emotionen in ihnen leitend sind. Ergänzend hinzu tritt eine Montage zentraler Passagen von Emotionstheorien von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. In der Rubrik "Fundstücke" werden Auszüge aus Germaine de Staëls "Traktat über die Gefühle" von 1796 abgedruckt und kommentiert.
