Quantum Chaos provides a comprehensive overview of our understanding of chaotic behaviour in a wide variety of quantum and semiclassical systems, and describes both experimental and theoretical investigations. A general introduction sets out the main features of chaos in quantum systems. Six years ago, in June 1977, the first international conference on chaos in classical dynamical systems took place here in Como. For the first time, physicists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, economists, and others got together to discuss the relevance of the recent progress in nonlinear classical dynamics for their own research field. Immediately after, pUblication of "Nonlinear Science Abstracts" started, which, in turn, led to the Physica D Journal and to a rapid increase of the research activity in the whole area with the creation of numerous "Nonlinear Centers" around the world. During these years great progress has been made in understanding the qualitative behavior of classical dynamical systems and now we can appreciate the beautiful complexity and variety of their motion. Meanwhile, an increasing number of scientists began to wonder whether and how such beautiful structures would persist in quantum motion. Indeed, mainly integrable systems have been previously con­ sidered by Quantum Mechanics and therefore the problem is open how to describe the qualitative behavior of systems whose classical limit is non-integrable. The present meeting was organized in view of the fact that scientists working in different fields - mathematicians, theoretical physicists, solid state physicists, nuclear physicists, chemists and others - had common problems. Moreover, we felt that it was necessary to clarify some fundamental questions concerning the logical basis for the discussion including the very definition of chaos in Quantum Mechanics.

This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Centro di Cultura Scientifica "A. Volta", Villa Olmo, Como, 25 June -6 .J uly 1990. R. Artuso, University of Milano, was the scientific secretary of the Institute, the director was P. Cvitanovic, Niels Bohr Institute, while G. Casati, Universit.y of Milano, acted as the host and the co-director. Other members of the scientific organiz- ing committee were R.E. Ecke, Los Alamos National Laboratory, M.J. Feigenbaum, Rockefeller University, and 1. Procaccia, Weizmann Institute. The attendence at the school consisted of 20 lecturers and 89 students. The term "student" covers here a broad range from a graduate student to a well.established professional, and indeed the Best Student prize was won by Eddie G.D. Cohen, a student well advanced. The organizers of the school would like to thank H.H. Rllgh and R. Nanoscale physics has become one of the rapidly developing areas of contemporary physics because of its direct relevance to newly emerging area, nanotechnologies. Nanoscale devices and quantum functional materials are usually constructed based on the results of fundamental studies on nanoscale physics. Therefore studying physical phenomena in nanosized systems is of importance for progressive development of nanotechnologies. In this context study of complex phenomena in such systems and using them for controlling purposes is of great practical importance. Namely, such studies are brought together in this book, which contains 27 papers on various aspects of nanoscale physics and nonlinear dynamics.

It has become clear in recent years that finding real chaotic behaviour in the sense of phenomena that persist in time does not exist for quantum systems. But still the question persists as what are the quantum manifestations of classical chaos, or rather how does a quantum system behave whose classical counterpart is chaotic. These proceedings discuss different contemporary aspects of this problem, experimental as well as theoretical.

This text contains the proceedings of two conferences on chaos in mesoscopic systems. The study of chaos in quantum systems has led to an understanding of quantum billiards and to the statistics of the distribution of energy levels of those systems.
