This book is a report of the findings of the International Study of Schizophrenia (ISoS), Focusing on variations in the course and outcome of schizophrenic disorders, the investigation covers 14 countries in both the developed and developing world. The bulk of the volume consists of portraits of individual field research centres in each country and reports on the outcomes of these centres' schizophrenic patients. The "portrait chapters" are flanked by introductory and synoptic chapters laying out both the genealogy and design of ISoS and synthesising its major findings. Of these, the most significant conclusions: that while recovery from schizophrenia is a struggle for many patients, it is possible to achieve in terms of improved daily function and quality of life and that, with appropriate and sustained treatment, schizophrenia is largely an episodic disorder that has a favourable outcome for a significant portion of those afflicted with it. The book also includes extensive tables that present the research data, permitting further independent analysis.Recovery from Schizophrenia is unique - there is virtually nothing like it in the contemporary field of cross-cultural psychiatric epidemiology, and the massive, multinational investigations upon which it is based are not likely to be replicated any time soon in the area of mental illness. As such, this book will be a unique resource for mental health professionals, practitioners, and researchers worldwide, providing an empirically based reason for hope in the long run for persons living with schizophrenia.

"A really first-rate piece of work on a most important topic. The style is warm, persuasive and engaging. The content is clear, incisive and wise. I recommend publication strongly and urgently - we really need this book! You have served the church and wider society very, very significantly by writing it." Julian Hardyman, Senior Pastor of Eden Chapel, CambridgeThe architects of the sexual revolution won over the popular imagination because they knew the power of story. They drew together radical new ideologies, often complex and hard to grasp, and melded them into the simpler structure of narrative. Crucially, they cast narratives that appealed to the moral instincts of ordinary, decent people. This moral vision overwhelmed the church and silenced its faltering apologists. The author argues that if Christians still believe they have have good news in the sphere of sexual ethics, then two big tasks lie ahead. Our first priority is to work out what has gone so badly wrong, both in our understanding and application of what the Bible teaches and the way we have presented our case to the non-churched. And then we must offer a better story, one that fires the imagination with such force that people will say, 'I want that to be true.'This book offers a confident, biblically rooted moral vision which needs to be shared with prayer and courage.

After decades of trying to feel good about ourselves, why do we still hunger for meaning and significance?Glynn Harrison argues that self-esteem ideology has led us down a psychological cul-de-sac that risks causing more harm than good, and today’s culture of narcissism and entitlement is the pay-off.Healthy psychological development and fulfilment come from seeing the self as part of something bigger. To achieve the sense of significance that we long for, we need a worldview capable of generating meaning and purpose. The Christian gospel calls us beyond the goal of self-esteem, encouraging us to stop judging ourselves, embrace our identity in God’s big story and look outwards to the pursuit of his glory. This is the only sure foundation for biblically based optimism, confidence and personal resilience.‘An important and timely book.’ Christopher Ash
