Have you ever wondered what’s on the other side? Most of us are so preoccupied with life in the here and now that we hardly stop to think about what eternity is actually like. It is, after all, a long way off for most of us—so we think we can give it some thought when it looms a little larger.

However, the Bible speaks of eternity as “present tense,” i.e. we are in it now. John 5:24 tells us that we have eternal life as soon as we believe in Jesus. So it begs the question, “If eternity is real and present, why can’t we see it? What is stopping us from perceiving its reality?”

It’s an important question because our identity is intrinsically linked to our environment, and so we need to be people who actually live in the environment of the kingdom Jesus restored to us. To do this, we must examine the reality of the realm of God and decide if we really are in it.

The true gospel message has little to say about what we do, and much to say about what Christ did, and who we are as a result. This gospel is not found in the busy activities of religion, it is more akin to a pilgrimage to the cross, you just go there and ask God to show you what it was all about. And then you go back, time and time again, all by yourself, and gradually the magnitude of it begins to dawn on you, and you stand amazed by it.

My intention in writing this book has been to ‘express the in-expressible’, the most astonishing spectacle ever presented to humanity – the surpassing greatness of Christ.Christianity is not primarily about the programs, activities and causes of church life, it is about the union that Jesus re-built between us and God. I spent the better part of my life deeply involved in the organization that represents the Lord of Glory, but the busyness of church life had a way of filtering out the magnificence of what I was actually in. I participated in the whole thing - except for the thing that matters most; the inexpressible wonder of knowing Christ Jesus.Now at last I know what I was missing, so I invite you to come on a journey with me into Christ. Not so that we can be better equipped for ministry, or more successful in our area of service – but because he is the lover of our souls, and he wants us to sit still and let him love us.I have deliberately written in a way that is more conversational than instructional. My intention in this conversation is not to tell you how to think or believe; only you can do that.But I am certain that once Jesus has been seen for who he really is, it will render you speechless too – unable to describe the indescribable… and you will be profoundly changed forever.

These old paradigms may be simply the established rhetoric of the culture of Christianity, or perhaps notions of God that have grown out of our need for security and identity – yet often we accept them without much thought, and find ourselves living out a form of Christianity which is incomplete and unsatisfying.The author himself went through a challenging time of re-thinking the Christian faith when the oft repeated party lines where inadequate for the real life issues he was facing – in the process he gained an insight into Jesus Christ, his life and death, and their relevance today.It was a realization of the extrava­gance of the work of Christ on the cross, and the relative dim glow gene­rated by the things of this world.We are hardwired to Christ – the cross has done its work.
