'A master of world cinema.' Cililan MurphySince the original publication of Loach on Loach in 1998, Ken Loach has completed fourteen full-length feature films. This substantial body of work includes The Wind That Shakes the Barley and the North East trilogy that concludes six decades behind the camera and continued the director's blistering attack on ruling-class oppression and the exploitation of ordinary working people. Thanks to Loach's close collaboration with the screenwriter Paul Laverty and support from the producer Rebecca O'Brien, this post-1998 period has proved the most compassionate, consistent and stylistically assured of Loach's career. In a series of lively conversations, Loach assesses the making of these humanistic films and the thinking behind them in considerable detail, further adding to his reasoned and incisive commentary on the state of British politics from the Thatcher era through to the rise of Keir Starmer.

"The clash of civilizations" has become a common phrase in discussions of U.S.-Middle East relations. This book explores the nature of the friction between the Muslim world and Western states, looking at legitimate perceptions and grievances on both sides involving historical, political, economic, cultural, psychological, and strategic elements. Arguing that "Islam versus the West" does not represent the arena of the next global ideological struggle, the authors examine specific issues of a bilateral nature that require careful handling to prevent the consolidation of states into opposing blocs. They discuss Islam's efforts to politically enhance the real power of Muslim states and to equalize relations with the West in the strategic arena; the enlarged role of Islam in the internal politics of Muslim countries; and the urgency of political, economic, and social change to break away from traditional authoritarian orders. A central theme of the book is that political Islam threatens the established order in most Muslim countries far more than it threatens the West and that violent confrontation can best be circumvented by integrating Islamist forces into the political process.

"Over the past decade the Middle East has undergone huge geopolitical shifts, including widespread war and violence, the collapse of numerous regimes, a changing American role, a restored Russian presence, and the emergence of ISIS. In this book Graham Fuller addresses the character of these shifts and how they will shape the future of this tumultuous region as well as the role of major outside powers. Fuller firstly focuses on Shari’a law and its appropriate role, if any, in the politics and governance of the Muslim world, thereby further exploring why identity may be the most important factor in examining Middle East politics today. Next he addresses the current Shi’ite-Sunni conflict, not simply by scrutinizing the essentially theological approach found in most Western analysis but also through better understanding the many more extra-religious factors behind the scenes. Finally the author claims that the appearance of ISIS has stretched the perennial phenomenon of Political Islam to the extreme. What, then, does ISIS imply for the future of the Middle East and for Islamist movements in general, not to mention for Muslims’ understanding of Islam itself?"
