Mithilfe multivariater Regressionsanalysen auf der Basis einer schriftlichen Befragung von 2200 zufällig ausgewählten BürgerInnen in Dresden gibt Guido Mehlkop einen neuen, tieferen und empirisch abgesicherten Einblick in die Prozesse der Entscheidung für oder gegen kriminelle Handlungen. Wenngleich kriminelle Handlungen auch prinzipiell als rationale Wahl zu sehen sind, so zeigt der Autor die Bedeutung sozialer Normen auf, die vor allem als soziale Symbole dienen;sie reduzieren Komplexität und bilden gleichsam einen Rahmen innerhalb dessen Handlungen selektiert werden. Eine reine Kosten-Nutzen-Abwägung findet nur bei denjenigen Personen statt, die Normen nicht vollständig internalisiert haben oder Normbruch neutralisieren können.
