Une Histoire de la Philosophie occidentale n’est pas seulement une introduction détaillée à la philosophie occidentale, des présocratiques jusqu’à nos jours, elle ouvre aussi la porte à une gamme de penseurs plus large que bien d’autres introductions et ouvrages historiques. De pair avec une discussion en profondeur des principaux mouvements philosophiques, les auteurs examinent les facteurs historiques qui ont influencé la philosophie occidentale, parmi lesquels les sciences de la nature, de l’homme et de la société tout autant que les idéologies politiques. Ce livre a été traduit en quatorze langues, du chinois au russe en passant par l’ouzbèk et l’islandais. À l’origine, il a été écrit pour un cours d’introduction à l’histoire de la philosophie donné en Norvège à l’université de Bergen, où les auteurs, Gunnar Skirbekk et Nils Gilje, sont tous deux professeurs de philosophie.
