Als Antifaschist« der ersten Stunde war er zugleich ein »Antitotalitärer«, der bei aller Kritik am Risorgimento-Liberalismus die zentralen Errungenschaften des »liberalen Systems«: Parlamentarismus, Gewaltenkontrolle, Pluralismus und Grundrechtssicherung, kompromisslos verteidigte, vor revolutionären Abenteuern jeglicher Art warnte und frühzeitig auf die strukturellen Gemeinsamkeiten der ideologischen Antipoden Faschismus und Bolschewismus aufmerksam machte. Er hat den Totalitarismusbegriff geprägt und in den langen Jahren seines Exils in England und den USA maßgeblich zur Verbreitung des Totalitarismuskonzepts beigetragen. Dieser Band bietet die erste deutschsprachige Edition der Schriften Luigi Sturzos zum Totalitarismus. Die Herausgeber, Uwe Backes und Günther Heydemann, führen in Leben und Werk Sturzos ein.

In the post-Communist countries of the EU a number of structural parameters have survived the transition that distinguish them from the other, more established democracies of the European Union – as well as from the other nations of the former Eastern Bloc. The authors of this volume address these differences and analyse the political, economic and social transformation processes that took place or are still taking place in this region. It becomes clear what role politics, the economy and society in general now play in these countries, where deficits are still prominent, and what the future holds.

Saxony was one of the most important regional centers of National Socialism during the so-called Third Reich. Recent research has turned its attention especially to the forces active in society during this era. This volume looks closely at the social practices of persons who worked in the middle to lower tiers of the official hierarchy at both the regional and local levels. It shows that there were many ways of supporting the Nazi regime and contributing to its success.

Der Band untersucht erstmals in vergleichender Perspektive den politischen und gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit den Opfern nach dem Fall der Diktaturen. Welche Entschädigungsleistungen erhielten die Opfer der faschistischen und der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur nach 1945 in Italien, in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und Österreich? Wie gingen die Gesellschaften in Spanien, Portugal und Griechenland nach dem Fall der Militärdiktaturen in den 1970er Jahren mit den Opfern um? Was erreichten die Opfer kommunistischer Diktaturen nach 1989 im wiedervereinten Deutschland, in Tschechien, Polen, Ungarn, Lettland und Russland? Das gesellschaftspolitische Umfeld brachte für die Opfer zumeist nur geringe Empathie auf, dennoch gibt es beachtliche Unterschiede in der staatlichen Rehabilitierungs- und Entschädigungspolitik, die von ausgewiesenen Experten in 13 Beiträgen analysiert werden.
