Document from the year 2022 in the subject Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: A, University of Namibia (Rundu Campus), language: English, abstract: Research has shown that poverty is a man-made phenomenon. Historical interventions to redress its rampant manifestation, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, very much remain a serial flaw of misplacements in the hands of wrong architects and premised on the unholy misconception that aid will lead to both poverty alleviation and economic development of Africa. Looking at the historical landscape of the poverty debate in Sub-Saharan Africa, one cannot help but notice the silence or scarce mention of entrepreneurship as the engine for growth in the alleviation of extreme poverty. Therefore the Africa Redemption International Conference (ARIC) was conceived from the premise of a long and hard look at the serial and regrettable failures of the three salient beaten-trek interventions of Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPS), Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRS) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Earlier interventions focused more on economic growth and paid little attention to social development. With the advent of MDGs, attention somewhat shifted towards resulting in poverty being reduced by more than half between 1990 and 2015. Critical success factors including infrastructure development, domestic resource mobilization, and institutional capacity building, among others, have largely been overlooked by most of these instruments. The architecture of poverty reduction strategies has, for far too long, been the work of foreign agents with little, if any, of Africans themselves. It is generally on this very basis that the ARIC Conference was convened with the objectives to:a. Bring academics, practitioners and policy-makers into one unique place to deliberate on issues that keep Africa behind any other parts of the world in emerging out of poverty. b. Allow policymakers to chart a way forward and share that with the broader body of light-minded Africans who want to seriously take the country of scourges of povertyc. Allow academics to analyze, articulate and recommend what they perceive Africa needs to do in order to overcome its stagnation that has earned its Mantra of a Dark Continent. d. Invite development activist in the world and Africa, in particular, to share their isolated experiences with a broader community of stakeholders willing to amplify their good practice efforts to other parts of Africa where they are needed most. e. Showcase domestic innovators of all sorts

Academic Paper from the year 2022 in the subject Pedagogy - Higher Education, grade: A, University of Namibia , language: English, abstract: This study had a purpose to understand the University of Namibia (UNAM)'s Doctoral Models and their performance in the recent past - 2012 to present. The method used was a simple desktop literature review on doctoral studies, the Namibian economy, state of higher education in the country, UNAM's Policies and Practices on Doctoral studies, and performance of UNAM's doctoral programs. It was found that the university is conformant to most international and national docterateness standards. As such there cannot be much doubt in terms of the quality of doctoral degrees that UNAM produces. However, limited doctoral supervisor's capacity, over dependent on PhD by research mode - ignoring many other approaches, and the linkage of university financing formula to enrolment figures than to graduate figures - a disincentive to potential supervisors, are critically compromising the university performance with regard to numbers of PhD outputs. The effect is evident in poor fairing of the University on research, patents and industrial designs - a clear warning that the university fall far too shot of being a significant player in the aspiration of Namibian becoming a knowledge economy. Therefore, the study strongly recommends a change in the University financing formula by government (to take into account institutional outputs), investing more training and development for supervisory capacity, as well as more public investment into the production of intellectual property to enable the university to compete with its peers locally, regionally and internationally. Future empirical tracer study research need to narrow on the role PhD graduates play in a knowledge economy

Academic Paper from the year 2024 in the subject Economics - Micro-economics, , language: English, abstract: This paper explores the critical role of human capital development in driving rural economic transformation in Namibia. Using a mixed method of policy gap analysis, informed group consultations and semi-structured interviews, it delves into the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to human capital development in rural areas, emphasizing the significance of community-based education initiatives, government support programs, and traditional knowledge and skills. Additionally, the paper examines the policy environment and gaps, challenges, and cross-cutting issues associated with human capital development in rural Namibia. It recommends for an integrated cross-sectoral policy framework to enforce institutional commitments at rural development level. Furthermore, the paper highlights the need for increased investment in education and training, promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation, and addressing gender disparities in access to education and training as essential strategies for advancing human capital development in rural Namibia. Multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral research in the future would suffice to unravel the challenge of rural transformation from different perspectives
