Arc welding continues to be the predominant fabrication process for a wide range of manufacturing industries, and the conference provided a unique insight into the process developments and applications from around the world. The economic success of a fabrication is critically dependent on the selection of the most cost effective welding procedures - hence the importance of companies keeping abreast of the latest developments in arc welding technology to ensure that the most cost effective and reliable procedures are used.The papers recognise the major improvements in arc process techniques, consumables and equipment which have taken place over the last decade or so and which have enabled significant increases in manufacturing efficiently and weld quality to be achieved.The content of this book is relevant to all manufacturing industries which utilise arc welding technology, including both heavy and light fabrication and in a range of materials. It will be of value to all concerned with the cost-effective fabrication of reliable products by arc welding - welding engineers, technical managers, designers, metallurgists, production engineers and quality assurance enigneers.

Within the last decade there has been an increasing awareness that use of standards deeply notched fracture mechanics test specimens can result in substantial over-or-under-assessments of the real fracture toughness associated with shallow surface cracks.

Global Review of Human Settlements: A Support Paper for Habitat: United Nations Conference on Human Settlement reviews global human settlement conditions and the factors affecting their present and future developments. The report presents information, analyses, and conclusions. It analyzes the causes and effects of the urbanization process; describes the quality of life in human settlements; and presents relevant definitions, list of tables, and country composition by regions. The urbanization process pertains to demographical and economical aspects. Demographical aspects include city size, city growth, migration, and natural increase. Natural population increase accounts for about one-half of urban population while migration from rural to urban places account for the other half. One aspect of the quality of life in human settlements is the prevailing housing conditions. According to the report, housing conditions in most developing countries have become worse in the past ten years due to rapid population growth, to rates of migration from rural to urban places, and to the decline of the rate of increase in national output. The report also contains a list of criteria used nationally to distinguish urban areas from rural areas. For example, South Korea defines urban areas as Seoul or municipalities with 5,000 or more inhabitants. The report is suitable for demographers, economists, environmentalists, ecologists, and policy makers involved in rural development and social services.

Radiation Protection: A Systematic Approach to Safety is a collection of papers that deals with the control, management, and prevention of toxic agents. One paper presents design measures, evaluated in a balanced program, as a practicable method to lessen occupational radiation exposure. Another paper cites the radiation protection aspects practiced in the decommissioning of the Fuel Reprocessing Plant at Trombay, which was designed to chemically process irradiated nuclear fuel. One paper describes a methodology to evaluate a collective dose of exposure through different routes following the release of radioactive material into the atmosphere. These routes include: (1) inhalation of the material from the initial cloud or that arising from the ground; (2) external irradiation from radioactive decay of the material in the cloud or in the air; (3) and as ingestion of radionuclides transferred through the food chain. One paper compares the chemical and radiation hazards to man using an analytical model, based on radiation biological concepts at the molecular level, to show the effects of other agents. The analytical model is also capable of predicting that a synergistic interaction between two different mutagenic agents can occur at the molecular level. The collection will prove useful for nuclear physicists and scientists, occupational health professionals, and researchers in the field of nuclear medicine and engineering.

Fusion Technology 1982, Volume 1 contains the proceedings of the 12th Symposium on Fusion Technology held at the Jülich Nuclear Research Center in Germany on September 13-17, 1982. The symposium provided a forum for assessing the state of the art in nuclear fusion as a source of energy. The discussions are organized around the following themes: first wall and vacuum systems; power supplies; divertor technology; tritium handling; remote handling; blanket technology and shielding; and safety. Comprised of 99 chapters, this volume first deals with nuclear fusion and spallation sources for breeding fissile fuel, followed by a discussion on the effects of pulsed loads on supply networks. The reader is then introduced to key issues for remote inspection and repair of a Tokamak; large-scale commercial facility for production of elemental tritium; and in situ coating of titanium carbide. Subsequent chapters explore the use of turbomolecular pumps for plasma fusion experiments; alternative for protecting ion sources of neutral injectors against damage from high voltage sparking; the effect of capacitive stored energy on neutral beam accelerator performance; and cooling of the divertor collector plates in the international Tokamak reactor. The symposium provided a forum for assessing the state of the art in nuclear fusion as a source of energy. Topics covered range from first wall, divertor, limiter, and vacuum technology to power supplies, neutral beam heating systems, and blanket technology. Tritium handling and magnet technology are also discussed, along with reactor studies and remote handling. Comprised of 118 chapters, this volume first provides an overview of the European Fusion Technology Program and its evolution towards NET (Next European Torus), followed by a discussion on the status of Tokamak physics. The reader is methodically introduced to fusion technology in the U.S. Magnetic Fusion Program; technical aspects of heating and current drive by lower hybrid waves on Tokamaks; and digitized high-power modulation. Subsequent chapters focus on tritium production and processing in a Tokamak reactor; the environmental impact of future fusion reactors; plasma exhaust purification; and operation of magnet power supplies. Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Durability of Building Materials and Components, Volume I contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Durability of Building Materials and Components held in Singapore on November 4-6, 1987. The conference provided a forum for reviewing advances that have been made with regards to the durability of building materials and components and tackled topics ranging from concrete materials and structures to fiber-reinforced concrete, plastics, surface coatings, and building codes and specifications. Comprised of 67 chapters, this volume first summarizes the technical barriers to service life prediction and outlines research directions for overcoming such barriers. The proceedings of a conference organised by the European Commission Joint Research Centre Institute of Advanced Materials. The conference was held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in October 1998 and covered all aspects of this highly important subject including links between structural integrity requirements and NDE performance. The development of performance demonstartion / qualification for NDE systems and experiance of their application in practice feature prominently. Development of improved NDE systems, new methods of NDE and methods for assessing NDE performance such as modelling are also included.
