This song cycle, composed between 1981 and 1990, reimagines traditional Malay pantun poetry through a Western art song framework, blending cultural heritage with compositional innovation. The book begins with a biographical portrait of Razak, tracing his multicultural upbringing, academic journey in the USA and UK, and his contributions to Malaysia’s music education and composition landscape. It then delves into the compositional techniques behind 10 Pantun Settings, highlighting Razak’s use of “Frankensteining”—a method of assembling disparate pantun texts into a cohesive musical narrative—and his rich use of musical imagery to evoke kampung life, childhood nostalgia, and emotional depth.
