The Palgrave Handbook on Participatory Action Research with Children seeks to explore the diverse approaches to participatory action research (PAR) with children across disciplines and in various settings and contexts from around the globe. As interest in participatory action research with children grows, there is a need for more literature detailing the processes and approaches across its various stages.The Handbook offers insights from researchers across six continents coming from diverse academic and professional backgrounds at varying stages of their careers and experiences in conducting PAR with children. It focuses on the importance of children’s participation in research while taking into account their rights, diverse lived experiences and contexts, ethical considerations, power dynamics, social inequalities as well as acknowledging limitations and challenges. The chapters explore the possibilities of advancing methodologies and approaches to PAR with children, inclusive practices throughout the PAR process, relational and curricular impact of PAR with children, and the ethics, challenges and opportunities of conducting PAR with children in different settings with the support of or co-led by community-based organizations. This volume seeks to impress upon the reader that PAR with children can be empowering to everyone involved - adults and children - if done ethically, with adequate training and support, and with the active participation and involvement of children as researchers/co-researchers and co-creators of knowledge throughout the process.

The chapters in Art as an Agent for Social Change, presented as snapshots, focus on exploring the power of drama, dance, visual arts, media, music, poetry and film as educative, artistic, imaginative, embodied and relational art forms that are agents of personal and societal change. A range of methods and ontological views are used by the authors in this unique contribution to scholarship, illustrating the comprehensive methodologies and theories that ground arts-based research in Canada, the US, Norway, India, Hong Kong and South Africa.Weaving together a series of chapters (snapshots) under the themes of community building, collaboration and teaching and pedagogy, this book offers examples of how Art as an Agent for Social Change is of particular relevance for many different and often overlapping groups including community artists, K-university instructors, teachers, students, and arts-based educational researchers interested in using the arts to explore social justice in educative ways. This book explores the connections made in and through arts-based educational research through four themes: socially engaged connections, cultural connections, personal and pedagogical connections, and making connections during the COVID-19 pandemic. It emerges from the 3rd bi-annual 2020 Artful Inquiry Research Group symposium on the theme of “connections”. The symposium brought together artists, community members, teachers, students, and researchers through a virtual platform to examine the way(s) in which the arts can help connect people, ideas, and spaces/places in a pandemic reality. Art plays a predominant role in each chapter as authors weave their research and art-based understandings together. This book is a valuable teaching resource for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in teaching, anthropology, digital ethnography, autoethnography, cultural studies, and communications. It is of interest to higher education students, academic researchers, and teachers exploring arts-based methodologies in the fields of creative practice and creativity studies, communications, critical studies, sociology, sciences, teacher education, and the arts.
