Det han erbjuder är inte historieskrivning i traditionell mening med händelser, årtal och namn, utan en sorts ”djup historia”. Baserad på biologisk, historisk och samhällsvetenskaplig forskning framkastar Sauer ett scenario för hur det ungefär kan ha gått till. Hanno Sauer, född 1984, är verksam vid filosofiska institutionen vid universitetet i Utrecht där han undervisar och forskar i etik. Boken var nominerad till 2023 års tyska fackbokpris.
