Erst Privilegierungen durch die Herrscher, vor allem aber Verschiebungen in der Wirtschaftsstruktur Bayerns und der wirtschaftliche Bedeutungsverlust Augsburgs trugen seit dem 19. Jahrhundert zum Aufstieg des Münchener Finanzplatzes bei. Die überdurchschnittlich gute Entwicklung der ortsansässigen Banken und Versicherungen nach 1945 verschafften München seinen jetzigen Status.
