In our everyday life, communicative processes are relevant in almost all situations. It is important to know whether you should say something which is adequate in the situation or whether it is better to say nothing at all. Communicative competence is fundamental for a successful life in our society as it is of great importance for all areas of life. Therefore, it is not surprising that communicative competence is the subject of many theoretical and empirical approaches and, in consequence, research on this topic is diverse. We focus our contributions on linguistic aspects of communication. In the centre of interest are linguistic oriented performances of different forms of communicative competence, language acquisition, and language disorders. The topics of this book concern the description of methods for studying language in the brain, the interaction between language and cognition, discourse acquisition of children, literacy acquisition and its precursors, the use and acquisition of the sign language, models and training of writing and reading, nonverbal communicative competence, media competence, communication training, developmental dyslexia, the treatment of stuttering, and the description of language disorders.

Der Anstoß zum Schreiben dieser Einführung in die Kognitionswissenschaft kam, als ich mich bei meinen Arbeiten zur kognitiven Sprachverarbeitung immer mehr mit theoretischen Grundlagenproblemen konfrontiert sah: Auf welcher Basis ist die Kooperation der verschiedenen an der menschlichen Kognition interessierten Wissenschaften möglich? Was ist überhaupt Kognition? Wie hängt die Kognition mit der Umwelt und mit dem Gehirn zusammen? Was ist kognitive Repräsentation? Wie funktionieren die kognitiven Produktions­ und Rezeptionsprozesse? Und was spielt sich beim kognitiven Lernen ab? Diesen Fragen kann nicht ausgewichen werden, wenn das Ziel eine theoretisch und methodologisch fundierte Analyse kognitiver Systeme sein soll. Einige Möglichkeiten, auf diese Fragen zu antworten, habe ich im vor­ liegenden Buch zusammengefaßt. Die Diskussion der verschiedenen Antworten erfolgt auf der Basis meiner Überzeugung, daß die menschliche Kognition nur begriffen werden kann, wenn man ihre Interaktion mit der Umwelt berücksich­ tigt. Diese ökologische Sichtweise der menschlichen Kognition ermöglicht auch ihre integrative Darstellung im Rahmen einer Konzeption situierten Handeins. Das Buch ist so aufgebaut, daß es als einführender Überblick für kogni­ tionswissenschaftliche Lehrveranstaltungen in Psychologie, Linguistik, Infor­ matik, Biologie und Philosophie dienen kann. Mit seinen zwölf Kapiteln bietet es eine mögliche Struktur für den Semesterverlauf an. Seine zahlreichen Literaturhinweise sowie das ausführliche Sach-und Personenregister erleichtern eine Vertiefung der Studien in Arbeitsgruppen oder im Selbststudium. Ich hoffe, daß dieses Buch eine erste Orientierung durch die manchmal doch recht verschlungenen Pfade der hier vorgestellten neuen Wissenschaftvom menschlichen Geist geben kann.
