This is primarily, but not exclusively, a book on Lindblom. All the pieces in it bear on his work, either as direct commentary on it or criticism of it, or as extensions of his ideas. But at the same time every piece follows the trajectory of its own ideas into the subject matter in which it delves. And these subjects are many and varied. Indeed, the prime purpose of this volume is to make the broad public aware of the full scope and amplitude of Lindblom' s thought and to convey something of the inner coherence that governs it. Anyone who has previously encountered Lindblom only in one manifestation of his multifaceted mind might be surprised to learn that there are so many other facets as well. Merely to list the disciplines to which he has contributed threatens to extend into an academic catalogue of ships. The astonishing aim of this bold and original study is no less than the construction of a comprehensive theory of culture–a theory that challenges many established approaches in disciplines such as philosophy, semiotics, sociology, political theory, aesthetics, and history itself. Building on the thesis that crucial changes in human cultural history correlate with fundamental transformations in modes of representation, Redner traces human development from primitive culture to that of the present age. He defines four modes of representation to account for the epochal stages in cultural history: fetishistic (primitive culture), iconic (early civilization), mimetic (the so-called Axial cultures), and representationalist (modernity from the Reformation to the present). Harry Redner's Aesthetic Life examines the arts - all the arts from the earliest Paleolithic painting to the latest post-Modern music. Its aim is to account for the nature of art in its historical totality and to assess the role it has played in human life throughout the ages. In seeking to review the history of art in all civilizations and separate cultures, this work is intensely aware of the critical state of the arts towards which this history seems to be heading. None of the great artistic cultures has survived intact as a living tradition. All have been more or less consigned to museums, the mausoleums of dead art. For Harry Redner, the phrase "beyond civilization" refers to the new and unprecedented condition the world is now entering‘specifically, the condition commonly known as globalization. Redner approaches globalization from the perspective of history and seeks to interpret it in relation to previous key stages of human development. His account begins with the Axial Age (700 300 BC) and proceeds through Modernity (after AD 1500) to the present global condition.What is globalization doing to civilization? In answering this question, Redner studies the role played by capitalism, the state, science and technology. He aims to show that they have had a catalytic impact on civilization through their reductive effect on society, culture, and individualism.However, Redner is not content to diagnose the ills of civilization; he also suggests how they might be ameliorated by cultural conservation. Above all, it is to the problem of decline in the higher forms of literacy that he addresses himself, for it is on the culture of the book that previous civilizations were founded. This study will be of interest to sociologists, historians, and social and political theorists.
