The eighteen essays collected in this book originate from a conference of the same title, held at the Wingspread Conference Center in October of 1993. Leading scholars were invited to reflect on their specialties in American religious history in ways that summarized both where the field is and where it ought to move in the decades to come. The essays are organized according to four general themes: places and regions, universal themes, transformativeevents, and marginal groups and ethnocultural "outsiders." They address a wide range of specific topics including Puritanism, Protestantism and economic behavior, gender and sexuality in AmericanProtestantism, and the twentieth-century de-Christianization of American public culture. Among the contributors are such distinguished scholars as David D. Hall, Donald G. Matthews, Allen C. Guelzo, Gordon S. Wood, Daniel Walker Howe, Robert Wuthnow, Jon Butler, David A. Hollinger, Harry S. Stout, and John Higham. Taken together, these essays reveal a rapidly expanding field of study that is breaking out of its traditional confines and spilling into all of American history. The booktakes the measure of the changes of the last quarter-century and charts numerous challenges to future work.

Today, even as it asserts itself globally, America lacks a grand strategy to replace the Cold War's 'containment of communism'. In this visionary book, Gary Hart, until recently co-chair of the U.S. Commission on National Security in the 21st Century, outlines a new principled approach, based on the power of American ideals, its 'fourth power'. Constitutional liberties, representative government, press freedom, and democratic principles, he argues, constitute a resource which is attractive to peoples worldwide, and may prove as important to national security as the three traditional powers -- military, economic, and political might.

Strategic Public Relations has been produced as a core book for what will become a series of second generation books treating public relations as a new, and separate discipline which has strategic implications for the whole business. Written primarily for senior executives and PR practitioners, Strategic Public Relations also serves students and young executives, covering such topics as: corporate goals and strategies; marketing communications; financial public relations; employee and local community relations; parliamentary and EU relations; building an international reputation; corporate advertising; sponsorship and media relations; communications research and corporate responsibility. All of the 16 contributors to this book, in addition to being recognised authorities in their fields, are senior practitioners. They will broaden your business horizons by showing you that corporate relations, if done properly, will lead to improved efficiency, improved competitive performance and, ultimately, to greater profit.

Recent decades have witnessed strong declines in fish stocks around the globe, amid growing concerns about the impact of fisheries on marine and freshwater biodiversity. Fisheries biologists and managers are therefore increasingly asking about aspects of ecology, behaviour, evolution and biodiversity that were traditionally studied by people working in very separate fields. This has highlighted the need to work more closely together, in order to help ensure future success both in management and conservation. The Handbook of Fish Biology and Fisheries has been written by an international team of scientists and practitioners, to provide an overview of the biology of freshwater and marine fish species together with the science that supports fisheries management and conservation. This volume, subtitled Fish Biology, reviews a broad variety of topics from evolutionary relationships and global biogeography to physiology, recruitment, life histories, genetics, foraging behaviour, reproductive behaviour and community ecology. The second volume, subtitled Fisheries, uses much of this information in a wide-ranging review of fisheries biology, including methods of capture, marketing, economics, stock assessment, forecasting, ecosystem impacts and conservation. Together, these books present the state of the art in our understanding of fish biology and fisheries and will serve as valuable references for undergraduates and graduates looking for a comprehensive source on a wide variety of topics in fisheries science. They will also be useful to researchers who need up-to-date reviews of topics that impinge on their fields, and decision makers who need to appreciate the scientific background for management and conservation of aquatic ecosystems.

It builds on material in Volume 1, Fish Biology, which ranges from phylogenetics and biogeography to physiology, recruitment, life histories, genetics, foraging, reproductive behaviour and community ecology.Together, these books present the state of the art in our understanding of fish biology and fisheries and will serve as valuable references for undergraduates and graduates looking for a comprehensive source on a wide variety of topics in fisheries science. Provides a unique overview of the study of fish biology and ecology, and the assessment and management of fish populations and ecosystems. The first volume concentrates on aspects of fish biology and ecology, both at the individual and population levels, whilst the second volume addresses the assessment and management of fish populations and ecosystems.Written by an international team of expert scientists and practitioners. An invaluable reference tool for both students, researchers and practitioners working in the fields of fish biology and fisheries.

Mental health is a significant factor in providing effective nursing care for patients in hospital and residential settings. Non-mental health nursing staff often lack the confidence, knowledge and skills to effectively meet the mental health needs of patients who are experiencing psychiatric problems and psychological distress. Mental Health Care for Nurses: Applying mental health skills in the general hospital provides a step-by-step guide which will help nurses identify these needs and address them in practice. The first part of Mental Health Care for Nurses: Applying mental health skills in the general hospital explores the context of mental health care in hospital and residential settings and provides a practical framework for assessment, planning and delivery of mental health care. The second part explores specific topics such as self-harm and suicide prevention, caring for the patient displaying challenging behaviour, maternal and perinatal mental health problems, mental health problems associated with old age, mood disorders, and illicit drug and alcohol dependence.

This is an exploration of Greek theatre as seen through its many depictions in classical art. "The Art of Ancient Greek Theater" addresses the vibrant imprint that ancient Greek tragedy and comedy left on the visual arts of classical Greece. Theatrical performance as we know it originated in mid-sixth century BCE with choral dances held in honour of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and patron of the theatre. The great tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, and the comedies of Aristophanes and Menander are preserved as some of the world's most revered literature and have formed the basis for theatrical performance up to the modern day. Over 90 objects - pottery vases, sculpture, reliefs, and masks - from museums across the world are featured with nine insightful essays and over 130 illustrations revealing the origins of Greek theatre and its multifaceted representation in the visual arts.
