Teachings on freedom and human wholeness“This seventh volume of the Centennial Edition of the Sufi Message series takes as its leading idea that of freedom. All beings pursue freedom since freedom is an essential quality of the soul. Too often, however, one person’s ostensible freedom is achieved at the expense of that of someone else. A truer freedom arises from the realization of interconnectedness. In the end, In an Eastern Rose Garden is a book about human wholeness. Peace and creativity, freedom and friendship, aristocracy and democracy, the inner and the outer—in the reconciliation of each of these pairs of seeming contraries lies the realization of the purpose for which we were created.”—From the introduction by Pir Zia Inayat Khan

A transcendent exploration of the nature and effects of sound by the Sufi master.
The Music of Life is the definitive collection of Hazrat Inayat Khan’s teachings on sound, presenting the Sufi master’s vision of the harmony that underlies and infuses every aspect of our lives. Inayat Khan explores the science of breath, the law of rhythm, the creative process, and both the healing power and psychological influence of music and sound, all with deep insight and wisdom.
“What makes us feel drawn to music is that our whole being is music: our mind and our body, the nature in which we live, the nature that has made us, all that is beneath and around us, it is all music. We are close to all this music, and live and move and have our being in music.”

Hazrat Inayat Khan’s classic 1912 work on Indian musical theory and practice.
The Minqār-i Mūsīqār is prized as much for the quality of its content as for its distinguished author. This book communicates the musical learning and enthusiasms of the twenty-five-year-old Inayat Khan, whose personal drive, ambition to engage with the wider world, and longing for the divine are palpable throughout.
In the Minqār-i Mūsīqār, we find a compilation of theory and practice current during Inayat Khan’s time and taught in his family line. Its sections on theory are based on the teachings of the author’s grandfather, Maula Bakhsh, and other late nineteenth-century sources. The songs at the center of the book are the author’s compositions, and the poetry collection includes more than sixty choice Urdu and Persian ghazals. But, as valuable as it is for its musical content, the Minqār is equally fascinating in what it tells us about the writer and the times in which it was written.
