Global knowledge is increasingly essential for all aspects of social work. Today's professionals respond to concerns including permeable borders, the upheavals of war, displaced workers, natural disasters, international adoption, and human trafficking. Everywhere, social workers work with service users and colleagues from diverse cultures and countries. Globally relevant concepts such as human rights, development, and inclusion offer new perspectives to enhance policy and practice and facilitate the international exchange of ideas. This handbook is the first major reference text to provide a solid foundation of knowledge for students and researchers alike. The extensive collection of 73 chapters confirms the integral and necessary nature of international social work knowledge to all areas of practice, policy, and research. Chapters systematically map the key issues, organizations, competencies, training and research needs, and ethical guidelines central to international social work practice today, emphasizing the linkages among social work, development, and human rights practice. In-depth country case studies and policy examples encourage readers to understand how their practice in social work touches on international issues, regardless of whether the work is done at home or abroad. Representing all regions of the world, a wide range of contributors that are leaders in their fields have put together an exhaustive collection that represents the state-of-play of international social work today.

Our understanding of the way in which animals know how, when, and where to orient and navigate around their environment has grown considerably over the last decade. Movements may be anything from small displacements in the immediate environment to the long-distance migration of salmon or swallows. How animals find their way around is both immensely variable and controversial - what cues they use and what senses are involved, how much they remember, to what extent they rely on instinctive information or learning, how the processing and storing of spatial information occurs in the brain. Discussion of landmark use, dead reckoning, spatial memory, and map-making ranges across disciplines, with different perspectives emerging from research in behaviour, ecology, psychology, and neurophysiology. Spatial Representation in Animals brings together cross-disciplinary research on navigation in several different species, in an accessible and exciting way. Individual authors, all eminent specialists within their fields, have been asked to present reviews of the material with which they are most familiar and to speculate about future directions in the field. This will be an ideal introductory text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of biology or psychology taking a course in animal navigation.

Multiple regression, linear modelling, and multivariate analysis are among the most useful statistical methods for the elucidation of complicated data, and all of them are most easily explained in matrix terms. Anyone concerned with the analysis of data needs to be familiar with these methods and a knowledge of matrices is essential in order to understand the literature in which they are described. This knowledge must include some advanced topics, but can do without much of the material covered by general textbooks of matrix algebra. This book is intended to cover the necessary ground as briefly as possible. Only the simplest of basic mathematics is used, and the book should be accessible to engineers, biologists, and social scientists as well as those with a specifically mathematical background. The text of the first edition has been re-written and revised to take account of recent developments in statistical practice. The more difficult topics have been expanded and the mathematical explanations have been simplified. A new chapter has been included, at readers' request, to cover such topics as vectorising, matrix calculus and complex numbers. From the reviews of the first edition '...this should be a valuable handbook for a great variety of statistical users.' Short Book Reviews of the International Statistics Institute '...a good reference book for the serious student.' Journal of the American Statistical Association '...a very worthwhile addition to anyone's shelf. Teaching Statistics 'I recommend it.' Technometrics
