Frida Kahlo is regarded as one of Mexico's greatest painters: her extraordinary personal style, her tragic story, her relationship with Diego Rivera (the more famous painter in their day) alongside her passionate paintings have made her a cult figure since she died over sixty years ago.But beyond the familiar images there is a private story about a daughter who confided in her beloved mama, Matilde Calderon Kahlo. Until now Frida's handwritten letters have only been available to scholars - and recently in Spanish in a book that appeared in 2016. Now for the first time we have over fifty of these letters in English.And what a treasure. Funny, observant and honest, they chart Kahlo's relationship with her mother; a relationship that was sometimes fraught - as with most mother and daughters - but was always alive and honest. They begin in 1923 when Kahlo was sixteen and continue until the death of her mother in 1932. These letters tell us about Kahlo's anxieties, her feelings about her husband and friends and above all reveal the marvellous, critical painter's eye in her description of people and places from Mexico, San Francisco and New York. Edited, translated and introduced by Dr. Héctor Jaimes, Professor of Spanish, North Carolina State University (who edited the Spanish version) this book is published with paintings and photographs.

Sanchez Prado, Ramon Alvarado Ruiz, Gaelle Le Calvez House, Julio Enriquez-Ornelas, Tomas Regalado-Lopez, Hector Jaimes, Rebecca Janzen y Cesar Antonio Sotelo en torno a la obra de Pedro Angel Palou. Asimismo, con textos agudos, sugerentes y definidos por la cercania con el escritor, participan tambien cuatro importantes escritores mexicanos: Monica Lavin, Eloy Urroz, Jorge Volpi y Vicente Alfonso. The first part explores the history of the group and its relation to the Latin American literary tradition, while the second part is devoted to the critical analysis of the works of each of the authors: Ricardo Chávez Castañeda, Ignacio Padilla, Pedro Ángel Palou, Eloy Urroz and Jorge Volpi. The volume is further enriched by the inclusion, in the appendix, of the two manifestos of the group: the Crack Manifesto and the Crack Postmanifesto (1996-2016). Este volumen colectivo es la revision mas completa hasta ahora de la obra de Jorge Volpi (1968), figura clave de la literatura mexicana actual. Aunque comenzo vinculado al movimiento literario del Crack, que apostaba por una narrativa ambiciosa y global, su trabajo trasciende ese marco generacional y se consolida como un proyecto literario amplio y complejo. En catorce capitulos, destacados especialistas analizan sus primeros pasos, su evolucion estetica y los temas que atraviesan su obra: la violencia, la historia y sus relatos, la relacion entre literatura, ciencia y tecnologia, la exploracion del pensamiento humano desde la neurociencia, y la teoria de la ficcion. El muralismo mexicano es uno de los movimientos artísticos de mayor impacto y trascendencia en América Latina, y marca un periodo fundacional en la cultura mexicana. Este sentido fundacional aparece desde sus inicios, pues cuando el filósofo José Vasconcelos es nombrado Secretario de Instrucción Pública (1921-1924), e invita a varios artistas a pintar sobre las paredes de diversas instituciones del gobierno, la idea de fondo era refundar la nación mexicana a través de las artes, ya que el país se hallaba fragmentado después de los años de la Revolución. Pero en la batalla por definir aún más el sentido estético que debía asumir este movimiento, David Alfaro Siqueiros promovió la idea de refundar el muralismo mexicano a partir de una asunción política y revolucionaria en el arte, y es así como en el seno del muralismo mexicano apareciera un sentido más social y comprometido. Además, como la visión política de Siqueiros fue desde siempre muy cercana al marxismo militante, esto generó polémicas y debates incluso entre los pintores del momento. Sin embargo, es ahora con la publicación de estos textos cuando conocemos de manera testimonial y directa, más detalles sobre la historia de esa batalla ideológica, la crítica al primer lanzamiento del muralismo, y el liderazgo de Siqueiros para profundizar una revolución estética. Para Siqueiros, no sólo se debían revolucionar las formas y los contenidos artísticos, sino también las herramientas del pintor y su metodología.
