Pentru cititorul interesat de psihanaliză, dar obișnuit să pună semnul egal între opera lui Freud și întreg domeniul deschis de el, Analiza Sinelui va fi un prilej de surpriză, contrariere, dezamăgire sau entuziasm. Heinz Kohut abandonează teoria freudiană a pulsiunilor ca principală componentă a psihanalizei și o înlocuiește cu o inovatoare teorie a narcisismului. Pornind de la abordarea terapeutică a tulburării de personalitate narcisice, autorul consideră filonul narcisic al dezvoltării psihice drept direcția sa principală, care își subordonează toate celelalte dimensiuni, inclusiv cea pulsională. O altă înnoire adusă de Kohut în psihanaliză este descoperirea și descrierea unor noi forme de transfer: transferul idealizant și transferul-oglindă. Abordarea tehnică a acestora este deosebită de abordarea transferului nevrotic descris de Freud. Ca fundament al psihologiei Sinelui, Analiza Sinelui prezintă interes nu numai pentru practicienii psihanalizei și ai psihoterapiei psihanalitice, ci și pentru psihoterapeuții de alte orientări, precum și pentru psihiatri și pedagogi.„Kohut a făcut pentru narcisism ceea ce romancierul Charles Dickens a făcut pentru sărăcie în secolul al XIX-lea. Originalitatea incontestabilă constă în a le fi pus pe ambele într-o formă care îndeamnă la acțiune."– International Journal of PsychoanalysisActivarea terapeutică a obiectului omnipotent (a imagoului părintelui idealizat), proces la care ne vom referi prin sintagma transfer idealizant, reprezintă revenirea în timpul analizei a unuia dintre cele două aspecte din faza timpurie a dezvoltării psihice. În această stare, după ce a fost expus unei perturbări a echilibrului psihic de la nivelul narcisismului primar, psihicul salvează o parte din trăirea privitoare la perfecțiunea narcisică globală.(…)Transferul-oglindă constituie reactivarea terapeutică a acelui aspect din etapa de dezvoltare în care copilul încearcă să salveze narcisismul atotcuprinzător de la început (acel „Eu plăcere pur", cum îl numește Freud), concentrând perfecțiunea și puterea în Sine — denumit aici „Sine grandios" — și retrăgându-se cu dispreț dinspre obiectul extern, căruia îi sunt atribuite toate imperfecțiunile. – Heinz Kohut
