Dieses Buch befaßt sich mit der Aufgabe, einen Grundrahmen für den Aufbau einer Methodenbank der Systemtheorie zu schaffen und die Anwendung desselben mittels einer konkreten Software-Implementierung zu demonstrieren. Als allgemeines Problemlösungsgerüst wird die sogenannte STIPS-Maschine eingeführt, mit der "Systemtypen" über "Systemtransformationen" abgeleitet und interaktiv "Systemalgorithmen" entwickelt werden können. Am Beispiel der speziellen Methodenbank CAST.FSM für die Behandlung von Problemstellungen der Automaten- und Schaltwerktheorie wird dieses Konzept demonstriert. Ziel ist es zu zeigen, welche Systematik heute bei der Sammlung von Methoden der Systemtheorie angewandt werden kann und wie es gelingt, eine solche Sammlung für die Entwicklung von Anwendungssoftware für den CAD-Bereich einzusetzen. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei die klassischen Anwendungsgebiete der Systemtheorie im Bereich des Entwurfs von komplexen Hardwaremoduln der Computertechnik und im Bereich der Signalverarbeitung. Das Buch zeigt, wie über die Entwicklung von Programmpaketen hinaus mit den heutigen Mitteln der Softwaretechnik mit Workstations leistungsfähig interaktive Methodenbanken für den Einsatz von systemtheoretischen Methoden in der Technik gebaut werden können.

These proceedings comprise the contributions of scientists, most of them from the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Siemens AG, Research and Development Department, to a joint meeting on advanced topics of information processing. The joint symposium, held in Moscow in June 1990, provided a platform for exchanging results and discussing the most recent advances in the fields of information processing, software and systems design automation. The symposium dedicated to information processing and software covered a broad range of different aspects with a focus on AI, CASE, and human interfaces. Special topics included artificial intelligence, machine learning, image and speech processing, and multimedia dialogue techniques. The second symposium covered concepts, approaches, and implementation aspects as well as future trends concerning systems design automation, especially for VLSI circuits. Major topics were hardware synthesis and hardware specification, physical design, testing aspects and simulation, framework and cellular automata.

0 e Neben der Entwicklung höchstintegrierter Hardware, mit deren Hilfe höhere Funktionalität und Leistung bei kleinerem Volumen und geringeren Herstellungskosten ermöglicht wird, gewinnt die Forschung und Entwicklung im Bereich der Software stetig an Bedeutung. Schon heute übersteigt ihr wertmäßiger Anteil im Durchschnitt 50 % der Systemkosten. Das erklärt auch die weltweiten Anstrengungen auf diesem Gebiet. Führende Universitäten, Großforschungsinstitute und die Industrie haben in den letzten Jahren vielversprechende Ergebnisse erzielt und damit den Weg für eine ganze Generation neuer Produkte geebnet. Aus Anlaß des 10-jährigen Bestehens der Hauptabteilung Informatik und Software in der Zentralabteilung Forschung und Entwicklung der Siemens AG wird ein internationales Symposium veranstaltet, dessen Themenbereiche - Kommunikation, Parallelrechner, Systemdesign, Künstliche Intelligenz und Signalverarbeitung - exemplarischen Einblick in Arbeiten und Kooperationen zwischen Wissenschaft und Industrie geben. Der vorliegende Tagungsband faßt die auf dem Symposium präsentierten Beiträge renommierter Wissenschaftler amerikanischer, österreichischer und deutscher Institute sowie international anerkannter Mitarbeiter der Siemens AG und der Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG zusammen.

Microelectronics are certainly one of the key-technologies of our time. They are a key factor of technological and economic progress. They effect the fields of automation, information and communication, leading to the development of new applications and markets. Attention should be focused on three areas of development: • process and production technology, • test technology, • design technology. Clearly, because of the development of new application fields, the skill ~f design­ ing integrated circuits should not be limited to a few, highly specialized experts Rather, this ability should be made available to all system aDd design engineers as a new application technology - just like nrogramrning technology for software. For this reason, design procedures havt: to be developed which, supported by appropriate CAD systems, provide the desIgn englIl~I' with tools for representaltop effective instruments for design and reliable ·tools for verificatibn, ensuring simpre, proper and easily controllable interfaces for the manufacturing and test processes. Such CAD systems are called standard design systems. They open the way to fast and safe design of integrated circuits. First, this book demonstrates basic principles with an example of the Siemens design system VENUS, gives a general introduction to the method of designing integrated circuits, familiarizes the reader with basic semiconductor and circuit tech­ nologies, shows the various methods of layout design, and presents necessary con­ cepts and strategies of test technology.

Microtechnologies and their corresponding CAD tools havemeanwhile reached alevel of sophistication that requiresthe application of theoretical means on all modelling levelsof design and analysis. Also, there is a growing need for ascientific approach in modelling again. Many conceptsprovided by Systems Theory again turn out to be of majorimportance. This is especially valid for the design of"machines with intelligent behaviour".When dealing with complex systems, the engineering designhas to be supported by CAD tools. Consequently, the methodsof Systems Theory must also get computerized. The newlyestablished field of "Computer Aided Systems Theory" (CAST)is a first effort in this direction. The goal of CASTresearch and development isto provide "Systems TheoryMethod Banks" which can be used in education and to providea platform for the migration of CAST methods into existingCAD tools.This book, basing on different research and developmentprojects in CAST, is written for engineers who areinterested in using and developing CAST systems,particularly in thefield of Information and SystemsEngineering.

Physicians, lawyers, engineers, architects, financial analysts, and other pro­ fessionals articulate an increasing need for support by intelligent workstations for decision making, analysis, communication, and other activities. "Intelligent Workstations for Professionals" is the collection of papers presented by inter­ national scientists at a symposium and workshop in March 1992. Requirements from potential users, studies of their behavior as well as approaches and aspects oftechnical realizations of "intelligent" functions are introduced. Eight contributions from members of the Center for Information and Tele­ communication Technology (Clrn of Northwestern University, Wisconsin­ Whitewater University, and the Children's Memorial Hospital deal with the latest findings of the UNIS (Users' Needs for Intelligent Systems) project, which is designed to identify needs and wishes from professionals for intelligent sup­ port systems and the potential barriers to adoption and use of such systems. The remaining papers concentrate on new approaches and techniques that en­ hance the "intelligence" of future workstations. They tackle issues like architectural trends in workstation design, the combination of workstations with HDTV and speech processing, automatic reading and understanding of documents, the automated development of software, or the processing of in­ exact knowledge. These papers were contributed by members of the DFKI GmbH (German Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence), GMD mbH (German Society for Mathematics and Data Processing), Siemens Gammasonics Inc., Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG and Siemens AG.
