During the last few years, computers have evolved from pure number crunching machines to "intelligent" problem solving tools. Increasing effort has been spent on the investigation of new approaches and the application of solutions to real world problems. In this way, exciting new techniques have evolved providing support for an increasing number of technical and economical aspects. Applications range from the design and development of ultra highly integrated circuits to totally new man-machine interfaces, from software engineering tools to fault diagnosis systems, from decision support to even the analysis of unemployment. Following a first joint workshop on Advanced Information Processing held in July 1988 at the Institute for Problems of Informatics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (IPIAN) at Moscow, this was the second time that scientists and researchers from the USSR Academy of Sciences and Siemens AG, Corporate Research and Development, exchanged results and discussed recent advances in the field of applied computer sciences. Initiated by Prof. Dr. I. Mizin, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and Director of IPIAN, and Prof. Dr. H. Schwartzel, Vice President of the Siemens AG and Head of the Applied Computer Science & Software Department, a joint symposium was arranged at the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow on June 5th and 6th 1990. The meetings on Information Processing and Software and Systems Design Automation provided a basis both for presentations of ongoing research and for discussions about specific problems.

Aus Anlaß des 10-jährigen Bestehens der Hauptabteilung Informatik und Software in der Zentralabteilung Forschung und Entwicklung der Siemens AG wird ein internationales Symposium veranstaltet, dessen Themenbereiche - Kommunikation, Parallelrechner, Systemdesign, Künstliche Intelligenz und Signalverarbeitung - exemplarischen Einblick in Arbeiten und Kooperationen zwischen Wissenschaft und Industrie geben. Der vorliegende Tagungsband faßt die auf dem Symposium präsentierten Beiträge renommierter Wissenschaftler amerikanischer, österreichischer und deutscher Institute sowie international anerkannter Mitarbeiter der Siemens AG und der Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG zusammen.

Microelectronics are certainly one of the key-technologies of our time. They are a key factor of technological and economic progress. They effect the fields of automation, information and communication, leading to the development of new applications and markets. Attention should be focused on three areas of development: • process and production technology, • test technology, • design technology. Clearly, because of the development of new application fields, the skill ~f design ing integrated circuits should not be limited to a few, highly specialized experts Rather, this ability should be made available to all system aDd design engineers as a new application technology - just like nrogramrning technology for software. For this reason, design procedures havt: to be developed which, supported by appropriate CAD systems, provide the desIgn englIl~I'' with tools for representaltop effective instruments for design and reliable ·tools for verificatibn, ensuring simpre, proper and easily controllable interfaces for the manufacturing and test processes. Such CAD systems are called standard design systems. They open the way to fast and safe design of integrated circuits. First, this book demonstrates basic principles with an example of the Siemens design system VENUS, gives a general introduction to the method of designing integrated circuits, familiarizes the reader with basic semiconductor and circuit tech nologies, shows the various methods of layout design, and presents necessary con cepts and strategies of test technology.
