Pirunsaarelta ei ollut kukaan paennut - ei ennen Papillonia. Rikollispiireissä hänet tunnettiin perhostatuoinnin takia nimellä Papillon. Vuonna 1931 hänet tuomittiin elinkautiseen murhasta, jota hän ei ollut tehnyt. Papillon jäi henkiin tiukasta eristyksestä ja vuosista Pirunsaarella, Ranskan Guayanan pahamaineisessa rangaistussiirtolassa.
