Through a discussion of border identities, this book presents a balance-sheet of key developments in modern French society and culture in the context of globalization. It seeks to re-define and re-consider the notion of the border in respect of the identification of a variety of visible and invisible 'border' situations.

The study of borders has recently undergone significant transitions, reflecting changes in the functions of boundaries themselves, as the world political map has experienced transformations. Gender (defined as the knowledge about perceived distinctions between the sexes) is an important signifier of borders as constructed and contested lines of differences. In the interplay with other categories of difference like class, race, ethnicity, and religion, it plays a major role in giving meaning to different forms of borders. It is not surprising, then, that an increasing number of studies in the last years have aimed for a gendering of border studies. This book explores this new interdisciplinary field and develops it further. The main questions it asks are: How do we define 'borders', 'frontiers' and 'boundaries' in different disciplinary approaches of gendered border studies? What were and are the main fields of gendered border studies in different fields? What might be important questions for future research? And how useful is an inter- or transdisciplinary approach for gendered border studies? Sixteen established scholars from various disciplines contribute chapters in which they set out how the issue of gender and borders has been approached in their discipline and describe what they expect from future research.

Based on a wide range of original sources, including folktales, anthropological studies, court statements, poetry and speeches, this book sheds new light on the struggle of people of African descent for full and equal citizenship in the post-emancipation British Caribbean. It examines the messages that African-Jamaican women were given about their place and roles from within and outside their own community, the extent to which these messages intersected with class and colour ideologies, and African-Jamaican women’s attempts to realise these ideals of femininity amidst various constraints. Incorporating the full realm of African-Jamaican women’s experiences, exploring not just their sexuality and reproduction but also their roles as labourers, citizens and freedom fighters, the book also links shifting gender ideologies to citizenship, race and nation. Essential reading for undergraduates and graduates interested in gender within the British Caribbean during the critical transformative period between 1865 and 1938, it will also interest political scientists and other scholars working on questions of nationalism, transnationalism and the gendered nature of citizenship.

In the first half of the 20th century, the first formal, truly global attempts at abolition and prohibition transformed the global contours of slavery, forced labor, and related exploitation. Yet the period 1900 and 1945 was also marked by an increase in the number of slaves and a greater range of forced labor, ranging from sharecropping and prison labor to sex trafficking and debt peonage. This paradox was the result of several factors, including European colonialization; globalization; commercialization; warfare; and the economic policies of the major global powers.The contributors to this volume reveal how contemporaries embraced the model of Atlantic or chattel slavery, which had been prevalent in the Americas until 1888. Colonial officials failed to legislate for many types of unfree labor because they did not closely match the Atlantic slavery model, allowing for the continuation of such practices as slave concubinage in various parts of Africa. And anti-slavery activists embraced the Atlantic slavery model to denounce certain labor practices, such as Indian indentured servitude in the Caribbean, because it was a powerful rhetorical tool to highlight an extreme degree of abuse. Piecing together their voices from official records, ethnographic accounts, and other evidence, the contributors to this book highlight that many slaves and other unfree laborers in the half of the 20th century were aware of changes in legislation governing unfree labor and that they used a range of means to resist or improve their situation.A Cultural History of Slavery and Human Trafficking is part of The Cultural Histories Series. Informed by critical race theory and based on a wide range of sources, including official sources, memoirs, and anthropological studies, this book examines multiple forms of racial discrimination in Jamaica and how they were talked about and experienced from the end of the First World War until the demise of democratic socialism in the 1980s. It also pays attention to practices devoid of racial content but which equally helped to sustain a society stratified by race and colour, such as voting qualifications. Case studies on the labour market, education, the family and legal system, among other areas, demonstrate the extent to which race and colour shaped social relations in the island in the decades preceding and following independence and argue that racial discrimination was a public secret – everybody knew it took place but few dared to openly discuss or criticise it. The book ends with an examination of race and colour in contemporary Jamaica to show that race and colour have lost little of their power since independence and offers some suggestions to overcome the silence on race to facilitate equality of opportunity for all.
