Weaving and Fabric in Antiquity: Materiality – Representation – Epistemology – Metapoetics presents 11 papers arranged under the four headings of the title which focus on the process of textile manufacture, the weaving process itself, and the materiality of fabric. Contributions address the problematic issues of cognitive archaeology, consumer research, literary theory and themes addressing both philosophical history and the history of reception of ideas and practice. The contributions seek both to close the critical gaps with respect to weaving, a broad and complex field in the area of ancient cultural techniques, and to identify new themes. Accordingly, the submissions expand our focus into late antiquity, to integrate texts such as letters written on Papyrus detailing the everyday correspondence of an Egyptian family or to spotlight the meaning of textile terms and the history of misunderstandings associated therein. Frequently overused analogies between writing and weaving are also examined in terms of their legitimacy as well as their limits. The papers presented here result from an international and interdisciplinary conference under the same title held in Castelen, near Basel in 2012. TEXT MOSTLY IN GERMAN

Millennium transcends boundaries – between epochs and regions, and between disciplines. Like the journal Millennium-Jahrbuch, the Millennium-Studien pursues an international, interdisciplinary approach that cuts across historical eras. The editorial and the advisory board represent a broad spectrum of disciplines: contributions from the fields of art and literature are just as well represented as historical, theological and philosophical contributions, and studies on Latin and Greek cultures as well as North African and Near Eastern cultures. In addition to offering a forum for monographs and edited collections on diverse topics, Millennium-Studien publishes commentaries and editions. Publication languages are primarily German and English; French, Italian and Spanish studies may be included. Am Oberrhein, einer der fuhrenden Regionen des fruhen Buchdrucks, wurden zahlreiche antike Autoren erstmals gedruckt und durch Paratexte sowie durch Kommentare erklart. Einer namhaften Zahl von Autoren dieser literaturgeographisch so einzigartigen Region widmen sich die Beitrage des Sammelbandes "e;Salz der Antike"e;, in denen anhand des thematischen Fokus "e;Satire"e; erstmals konsequent und anhand einer reprasentativen Auswahl von Texten gefragt wird, mit welchen konzeptuellen Zugangen sich die oberrheinischen Humanisten den antiken Autoren annaherten. Dans le Rhin Superieur, une des regions maitresses de l'imprimerie ancienne, de nombreux auteurs antiques furent imprimes pour la premiere fois et eclaires par des paratextes et des commentaires. C'est a un nombre notable d'auteurs de cette region si particuliere sur le plan litteraire et geographique que s'attachent les contributions du recueil "e;Sel antique"e;, dans lesquelles, en prenant comme thematique la "e;satire"e; et sur la base d'un echantillon representatif de textes, a ete posee pour la premiere fois et de maniere consequente la question de savoir avec quels moyens conceptuels les humanistes du Rhin Superieur ont accede aux auteurs anciens.

Dans le cadre d''un projet INTERREG IV Rhin Supérieur, "Patrimoine Humaniste du Rhin Supérieur" / "Humanistisches Erbe am Oberrhein" (2011-2015), réunissant des latinistes et hellénistes des Universités de Freiburg i.B., Strasbourg, Bâle et Mulhouse, nous avons voulu étudier les sources humanistes conservées dans la région en prenant comme thème d''approche, celui des "bouleversements". Ils ne manquent ni dans l''Antiquité ni à la fin du XVe siècle et durant tout le XVIe siècle. Nous sommes à la fin d''un monde tourné vers le passé, la tradition, le respect absolu des Anciens, et à l''aube des Temps Modernes, tournés vers l''avenir, croyant au progrès dans toutes les disciplines de l''esprit. L''invention de l''imprimerie, la découverte du Nouveau Monde, les bouleversements sociaux, politiques et religieux ainsi que les nouveaux modes de pensée et de transmission du savoir sont autant d''éléments qui, étudiés par les différents contributeurs de l''ouvrage, pourront intéresser le lecteur et lui permettre de mieux comprendre comment les deux ou trois générations humanistes du Rhin Supérieur ont vécu ce passage-charnière.
