Han har ofta kritiserat den överdrivna amerikanska idealismen och världsförbättrarivern, men har också understrukit betydelsen av att USA inte faller tillbaka i isolationism. Bland hans böcker märks till exempel Diplomacy (1994) och Att återvinna världen (1957, 1973 på svenska), som handlar om Wienkon­gressen.

År 1950, vid 27 års ålder, skrev Henry Kissinger The Meaning of History som sin avhandling vid Harvard University. Nu, mer än 70 år senare, publiceras den för första gången.

Avhandlingen utforskar idéer hos tre viktiga tänkare ur den filosofiska och historiska västerländska tanketraditionen, på ett sätt som även speglar Kissingers egen förflyttning från den europeiska kontinenten över Atlanten: Oswald Spengler (18801936), en tysk historiker och filosof; Arnold Toynbee (18891975), en brittisk historiker och filosof; samt Immanuel Kant (17241804), en preussare från den europeiska upplysningstiden och en av sin tids viktigaste filosofer.

Texten brottas med några av den västerländska politiska, filosofiska och moraliska tanketraditionens mest grundläggande dilemman. Den tar sin början vid upplysningstiden och fortsätter fram till mitten av 1900-talet en period som präglades av två världskrig och atomålderns början.
