Fibrewise Topology
Häftad, Engelska, 2008

Skickas inom 7-10 vardagar
The aim of this book is to promote a fibrewise perspective, particularly in topology, which is central to modern mathematics. Already this view is standard in the theory of fibre bundles and therefore in such subjects as global analysis. It has a role to play also in general and equivariant topology. There are strong links with equivariant topology, a topic which has latterly been subject to great research activity. It is to be hoped that this book will provide a solid and invigorating foundation for the increasing research interest in fibrewise topology

The Topology of Stiefel Manifolds
Häftad, Engelska, 1977
841 kr
Skickas inom 7-10 vardagar
Stiefel manifolds are an interesting family of spaces much studied by algebraic topologists. These notes, which originated in a course given at Harvard University, describe the state of knowledge of the subject, as well as the outstanding problems. The emphasis throughout is on applications (within the subject) rather than on theory. However, such theory as is required is summarized and references to the literature are given, thus making the book accessible to non-specialists and particularly graduate students. Many examples are given and further problems suggested.

Topological Topics
Articles on Algebra and Topology Presented to Professor P J Hilton in Celebration of his Sixtieth Birthday
Häftad, Engelska, 1983

Skickas inom 7-10 vardagar
Professor Peter Hilton is one of the best known mathematicians of his generation. He has published almost 300 books and papers on various aspects of topology and algebra. The present volume is to celebrate the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. It begins with a bibliography of his work, followed by reviews of his contributions to topology and algebra. These are followed by eleven research papers concerned with various topics of current interest in algebra and topology. The articles are contributed by some of the many mathematicians with whom he has worked at one time or another. This book will be of interest to both topologists and algebraists, particularly those concerned with homotopy theory.

Aspects of Topology
In Memory of Hugh Dowker 1912-1982
Häftad, Engelska, 1985

Skickas inom 7-10 vardagar
This is a memorial volume to the distinguished Canadian-born mathematician Hugh Dowker, one of the most highly regarded topologists in the United Kingdom and sometime Professor at Birkbeck College, London. The volume comprises specially written articles on various topological topics by experts in many countries who worked with Dowker at one time or another. These include survey, expository and research articles on general topology, algebraic topology and related subjects such as knot theory and graph theory. The volume will be of great interest to graduate students and professional mathematicians whose speciality is topology, in all its aspects.

Introduction to Uniform Spaces
Häftad, Engelska, 1990
774 kr
Skickas inom 7-10 vardagar
This book is based on a course taught to an audience of undergraduate and graduate students at Oxford, and can be viewed as a bridge between the study of metric spaces and general topological spaces. About half the book is devoted to relatively little-known results, much of which is published here for the first time. The author sketches a theory of uniform transformation groups, leading to the theory of uniform spaces over a base and hence to the theory of uniform covering spaces. Readers interested in general topology will find much to interest them here.

The Mathematical Works of J. H. C. Whitehead, Volume 2: Complexes and Manifolds contains papers that are related in some way to the classification problem for manifolds, especially the Poincare conjecture, but towards the end one sees the gradual transition in the direction of algebraic topology. This volume includes all Whitehead''s published work up to the year 1941, as well as a few later papers. The book begins with a list of Whitehead''s works, in chronological order of writing. This is followed by separate chapters on topics such as analytical complexes; duality and intersection chains in combinatorial analysis situs; three-dimensional manifolds; doubled knots; certain sets of elements in a free group; certain invariants introduced by Reidemeister; and the asphericity of regions in a 3-sphere. Also included are chapters on the homotopy type of manifolds; the incidence matrices, nuclei and homotopy types; vector fields on the n-sphere; and operators in relative homotopy groups.

The Mathematical Works of J. H. C. Whitehead, Volume 1: Differential Geometry contains all of Whitehead''s published work on differential geometry, along with some papers on algebras. Most of these were written in the period 1929-1937, but a few later articles are included. The book begins with a list of Whitehead''s works, in chronological order of writing as well as a biographical note by M. H. A. Newman and Barbara Whitehead, and a mathematical appreciation by John Milnor. This is followed by separate chapters on topics such as linear connections; a method of obtaining normal representations for a projective connection; representation of projective spaces; convex regions in the geometry of paths; locally homogeneous spaces in differential geometry; and the decomposition of an infinitesimal group. Also included are chapters on locally homogeneous spaces in differential geometry; Maurer''s equations; linear associative algebras; an expression of Hopf''s invariant as an integral; and normalizators of transformation groups.

Homotopy Theory contains all the published mathematical work of J. H. C. Whitehead, written between 1947 and 1955. This volume considers the study of simple homotopy types, particularly the realization of problem for homotopy types. It describes Whitehead''s version of homotopy theory in terms of CW-complexes. This book is composed of 21 chapters and begins with an overview of a theorem to Borsuk and the homotopy type of ANR. The subsequent chapters deal with four-dimensional polyhedral, the homotopy type of a special kind of polyhedron, and the combinatorial homotopy I and II. These topics are followed by reviews of other homotopy types, such as group extensions with homotopy operators, cohomology systems, secondary boundary operator, algebraic homotopy, and the G-dual of a semi-exact couple. The last chapters examine the connected complex homotopy types and the second non-vanishing homotopy groups. This book will be of great value to mathematicians.

Algebraic and Classical Topology contains all the published mathematical work of J. H. C. Whitehead, written between 1952 and 1960. This volume is composed of 21 chapters, which represent two groups of papers. The first group, written between 1952 and 1957, is principally concerned with fiber spaces and the Spanier-Whitehead S-theory. In the second group, written between 1957 and 1960, Whitehead returns to classical topology after a long interval, and participates in the renewed assault on the problems which fascinated him most. This book will prove useful to mathematicians.
