This is a book for electrical and electronic engineers, not for materials scientists. Every explanation is rendered in its simplest and clearest form and as many relevant examples are included as possible. At every point, the author makes clear the direct relevance of every topic to the reader's main course of study: electrical and electronic engineering. The central theme is that the type of bonding in a solid not only controls its electrical properties but also, and just as directly, its mechanical properties and how things are made from it. Thus the reason why a copper wire can conduct electricity is exactly the same reason it can be drawn into a wire in the first place. The reason why a piece of porcelain does not conduct electricity is the same as why it cannot be rolled into its final shape as copper could and thus has to be made directly. This common origin of electrical and mechanical properties dictates the structure of the book. - E-bokPDF, Engelska, 1998

The Role of Business Ethics in Economic Performance is a major edited collection of papers on why and how the conduct of business behaviour effects its commercial success. The book offers a comprehensive introduction to the issues looking at the lessons from economic theory, the institutional setting and the supply and demand side conditions which are forcing firms to take ethics seriously. Lord Eatwell considers the ethical foundations of the market economy. Mark Casson analyses the economic importance of leaders, while Simon Deakin and Frank Wilkinson empirically examine the role of contractual obligation in the UK. Adrian Cadbury and Norman Barry examine voluntary institutions and government''s importance in setting ethics. Maurie Cohen and Russell Sparkes look at the ethical consumers and ethical investors increasing influence on business conduct. Finally Clive Wright and Neil Hood examine the internal organisation of national and transnational firms which increasingly build an ethical dimension into their corporate decision making. - Inbunden, Engelska, 1998

The growth of women's ordained ministry is one of the most remarkable and significant developments in the recent history of Christianity. This collection of essays brings together leading contributors from both academic and church contexts to explore Christian experiences of ordaining women in theological, sociological, historical and anthropological perspective. Key questions include: How have national, denominational and ecclesial cultures shaped the different ways in which women's ordination is debated and/or enacted? What differences have women's ordained ministry, and debates on women's ordination, made in various church contexts? What ‘unfinished business' remains (in both congregational and wider ministry)? How have Christians variously conceived ordained ministry which includes both women and men? How do ordained women and men work together in practice? What have been the particular implications for female clergy? And for male clergy? What distinctive issues are raised by women's entry into senior ordained/leadership positions? How do episcopal and non-episcopal traditions differ in this? - E-bokPDF, Engelska, 2008

Traditionally, city museums have been keepers of city history. Many have been exercises in nostalgia, reflecting city pride. However, a new generation of museums focuses increasingly on the city's present and future as well as its past, and on the city in all of its diversity, challenges, and possibilities. Above all, these museums are gateways to understanding the city—our greatest and most complex creation and the place where half the world's population now lives. In this book, experts in the field explore this 'new' city museum and the challenge of contributing positively to city development. - Häftad, Engelska, 2010

Safety Bicycle

The safety bicycle, with front-wheel steering and pedal-driven rear wheel, has existed in some form since the experiments of Kirkpatrick Macmillan in 1839, but his ideas were almost forgotten when the front-wheel driven boneshakers and penny farthings reigned supreme. Then, in the 1870s, experimental safeties appeared, culminating in Henry Lawson’s Bicyclette of 1879. Within ten years the modern bicycle had developed, to remain basically unchanged for over seventy years. Many specialist and experimental designs have appeared since the late nineteenth-century, most of which, if they passed the prototype stage, failed to attract the public and now languish in museums. - E-bokPDF, Engelska, 2021
