Together with its companion volume LNCS 2343, this book constitutes the refereed post-proceedings of the International Conference on Information Networking, ICOIN 2002, held in Cheju Island, Korea in January/Febuary 2002. The 140 revised full papers presented were carefully selected and revised during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. The papers are organized in topical sections on new networking applications, switching and routing, optical networks, network performance, quality of service, home networking and local access protocols, network management, wireless and mobile Internet, 4 G mobile systems, satellite communication systems, network security, multimedia applications, and distributed systems.

The papers comprising Vol. I and Vol. II were prepared for and presented at the International Conference on Information Networking 2002 (ICOIN 2002), which was held from January 30 to February 1, 2002 at Cheju Island, Korea. It was organized by the KISS (Korean Information Science Society) SIGIN in Korea, IPSJ SIG DPE (Distributed Processing Systems) in Japan, the ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute), and National Taiwan University in Taiwan. The papers were selected through two steps, refereeing and presentation review. We selected for the theme of the conference the motto “One World of Information Networking”. We did this because we believe that networking will transform the world into one zone, in spite of different ages, countries and societies. Networking is in the main stream of everyday life and affects directly millions of people around the world. We are in an era of tremendous excitement for professionals working in many aspects of the converging networking, information retailing, entertainment, and publishing companies. Ubiquitous communication and computing technologies are changing the world. Online communities, e commerce, e service, and distance learning are a few of the consequences of these technologies, and advanced networking will develop new applications and technologies with global impact. The goal is the creation of a world wide distributed computing system that connects people and appliances through wireless and high bandwidth wired channels with a backbone of computers that serve as databases and object servers. This volume, LNCS 3961, contains the papers selected from those presented at the International Conference on Information Networking 2006 (ICOIN 2006), held in Sendai, Japan. ICOIN 2006 constituted the 20th Anniversary of ICOIN. This year's conference program mainly focused on the field of ubiquitous and overlay networks, and on technology for ad hoc and sensor networks, mobile networks, transport networks, QoS and resource management, network security, peer-to-peer and overlay networks, resource management, and their applications. In response to the call for papers, 468 papers were submitted by authors from 23 different countries from Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. Each paper was evaluated by two or three internationally known experts to assure the excellence of the papers presented at ICOIN 2006. To keep within the conference topics, some excellent papers had to be rejected to our regret. After extensive reviews, 141 papers were chosen for presentation in 25 technical sessions. Furthermore, another review of these papers was performed during presentation, and finally 98 papers were selected for printing in LNCS 3961. We expect this will add to the excellence of ICOIN 2006. This volume contains the set of revised selected papers presented at the 21st International Conference on Information Networking (ICOIN 2007), which was held in Estoril, Portugal, January 23–25, 2007. The conference series started under the name of Joint Workshop on Computer Communications, in 1986. At that time, it constituted a technical meeting for researchersand engineers on - ternet technologies in East Asian countries, where several technical networking issues were discussed. In 1993, the meeting was reorganized as an international conference known as ICOIN. Recent conferences were held in Sendai, Japan (2006),Jeju,Korea(2005),Pusan,Korea(2004),Jeju,Korea(2003),Jeju,Korea (2002), Beppu City, Japan (2001), Hsin-chu, Taiwan (2000), and Tokyo, Japan (1999). In 2007, for the ?rst time since its creation, ICOIN took place outside Asia, and we were very pleased to host it in Portugal. ICOIN 2007 was or- nized by INESC-ID and IST/Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal) with the technical co-sponsorship of IEEE Communications Society and IEEE Portugal Section-Computer Society Chapter, in cooperation with the Order of Engineers CollegeofInformaticsEngineering(Portugal),IPSJ(InformationProcessing- ciety of Japan), KISS (Korea Information Science Society), and Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS), Springer, Germany. The papers presented in this volume were selected in two stages: 1) revi- ing and selection for the ICOIN program and 2) on-site presentation review by session chairs or by program committee chairs.
